My M70 416 Rem is built on their standard "long" action, I believe.

I really like the .416 Rem. Mag. I’ve used it in a Rem. 700 for a couple Cape buff, Hippo, and Australian Water buffalo, and in a Win. Mdl. 70 for a couple Russian Brown bears. I always used the 400 gr. Hornady softs, except on Hippo, where I used their solid. The Rem. ran best at 2270 fps, the Win.at 2400 fps.

My Traditional African Game Cartridge is the .450/400 NE, I use it for dangerous whitetail deer and plinking. Though I shoot very non-tradiitional loads in it (300grs @ 2700 fps) I call the "giggle gun" because it never fails to make me smile and laugh when shooting it. We have a 3/4 size steel IPSC target at 200 yards, and even though I have a large U notch rear sight, and a very large fiber optic front sight on it that's probably twice as wide as the steel at 200 yards, I can ring it with boring regularity off hand. The D weight barrel makes it so heavy, it's steady as can be shooting off hand. Those D-weight barreled 450-400 are quite rare! My No 1 450-400 was the Boddington Buffalo version, with a C-weight barrel. There were a few times I wished I had the D-weight!

32-ish of them? I bought it off Gunbroker from a pawn shop in Texas. I didn't really notice the barrel in the listing, the pictures weren't great. When I opened the box at my FFL I thought "Good grief it's a dang truck axle, why is it so big?" Then I kind of remembered hearing about the D's. I was quite happy. lol The C weight would be easier to carry but certainly less fun to shoot.

Other classic British African rounds could also include the 400/350, once the most widely used British medium, before the 375 H&H came along. 310 grain at just over 2000 fps. Doesn't sound like much, but the sectional density does the job. Also, another one of my favorites, the .404 Jeffrey. I've used P14 actions to build both of these rounds and they are as effective now as then. Also have a Tanganyika Game Department cropping rifle in .404. Built on a Pattern 14 Enfield as well by Vickers. In German East and West Africa (Tanzania and Namibia today) the 9.3x62 would have been popular, as it came to be in British East after the war (i.e. 1918). And don't discount the 8mm Mauser and 8x60 Mauser, both widely used in Kenya and British East Africa. The 8x60 is quite a round, a bit more power than the '06 with the heavy loads. The 450/400-3", was another popular round for medium bore use. A friend has an Encore barrel in this, shoots well with 400's at just over 2000 fps.

I wanna see a youtube video of a guy firing a 470 Contender My son and I have shot 500 Ne in an Encore. Think I have a short video somewhere. The brake was very effective thankfully!
