Haven't been online too much for the past few weeks. But when I have, I have enjoyed being able to live vicariously through all the hunting tales ya'll have been posting. THANK YOU ALL!
A few weeks back i had high hopes for the upcoming hunting season, and really looked forward to some deer action for my octagon mid frame, and my brand new used GP-100. The stands were set, runs scouted, deer espied, and it all looked very promising. THEN . . . About four days before deer season opened, I was polishing a small die/punch set together. I was down to that last tiny fractions where things come together but just "stick"a little here and there. On one of those little tight spots i got a minor "stick" and just gave things a little twist to break them free. Nothing forceful or jarring - this is not force work, but delicate light fitting! The die and punch came right apart - so did something in my hand! I felt it pop. I heard it pop. I spent several minutes doing what Pat McManus used to call the crouch hop. I invented several new and interesting curse words.
In a few minutes time the hand swelled up quite impressively. And it genuinely HURT. I have never been faint of heart about such things, and have been chewed up, chopped up, and broken around the edges many times in my life. But I kid you not this SOB hurt! It took a couple days to get into a doc, and a couple more for covidfascists to allow a visit to an x-ray. (Had to start there because getting into the MRI was a real joke!~) But once I did they found 5 non displaced stress fractures in my hand!!! FIVE! I had not twisted hard enough to rev a motorcycle, and broke my damn hand in five places! Needless to say this put the halt on deer season!
Still, the doc though that was all I had done, and he said if I could behave myself we could skip drastic measures and just baby it for 5-6 weeks and it should heal. Yup! Although I am a big fan of ignore it it will go away - Didn't work so good this time. I could live with missing deer season, I love hunting, but I ain't near as mad at them these days as when I was younger. Besides, I dearly love coyote hunting and I figured if I healed up as predicted, I could still get a productive winter in on them. WEEEeeeelllll. . . Not so much. Today I was told they have decided I have some ligament damage, and the hand is not healing well at all. SO now I have to go and get it stabilized with a pin through the thumb area, and a cast, and an 8 week PITA wait. SO this season looks to be a bust. Right now I can actually grip and hold a handgun. BUT, I doubt I could generate enough strength to pull the trigger! And I cringe to think of how it would feel to whack that swollen ham with a 44!!!!
SO keep the stories coming guys! It is good at least to see and hear the successes of others!
