My Handloader Magazine arrived and I'm always overjoyed to see it contain a Brian Pearce Revolver Article. This issue it's the 454 Casull. It's bliss to read information by someone who truly understands handloading. Not to be confused with reloading. The research that goes into his articles is staggering and probably underappreciated. BRIAN IS TH EMOST THOROUGH WRITER I KNOW. WE MADE THE HOLSTER WITH THE 4-3/4" .454 TOGETHER 30+ YEARS AGO. GOOD LEATHER , GOOD DESIGN LASTS I always bought the magazine that you wrote fir just to read "Tiffin Tests". Always enjoyed those and looked forward to the next one

Ok, along the lines of usually loading it down except for when MAX power is wanted (Protection against big things that will eat your liver...), who can speak to experience with the the available options for a 454 Casull chambered lever action to go with the revolver?

I don't know....if I wasn't planning to run it full throttle, I would just choose a less powerful cartridge to shoot. Maybe if I only owned a few guns, I would water down my big ones. But probably not. Tony The beauty of a knowledgeable reloaded is the ability to load up or down with accuracy

There seems to be an aversion to the idea of loading the 454 to anything less than the maximum SAAMI pressure of 65Kpsi. At the same time purchasing 48Kpsi maximum SAAMI pressure Ruger 480s and downloading them to the subsonic threshold (~30Kpsi) seems to be a popular practice. Curious eh?

edk, that is what I dont get. Why NOT down load it? When you need "rocks and dynamite" loads, go for it. The 454 will give you all the recoil and heart throttle 70% of the handgunners of the world can handle. Yeah, there are some that look at full throttle 454 loadings and go "Pffft. Give me more.", but most of us dont want full throttle loads. Downloading a 454 to 30K PSI is still stout enough of a load for anything that is not wanting to eat your liver but the weapon will last 5 lifetimes. With me picking up my 454 Freedom Arms this evening, I was EXTATIC to see this article. I can load sedate 454 loads and no one can load them in a Colt SAA or clone! Safety Safety Safety!
Also, my order of 300 45 caliber silver "Black Talon" bullets came in. Shoot, we are moving up!

Very refreshing to read a thread about a magazine article that doesn't sink into a competition of who can beat up on gun magazines and/or writers.
I love my FA 83 with its extra cylinders. At 78 I sure don't load near to the max. but enjoy it just the same.

TOOK A WHILE BUT I FINALLY RECEIVED THIS HANDLOADER MAGAZINE ON 1/12/21. I HAVE ALWAYS LOADED MY 454's UP, NEVER DOWN, AS A CONSEQUENCE OF WHICH I DO NOT SHOOT THEM A LOT, MOSTLY SIGHT IN AND THEN SHOOT GAME, BUT I AM LIKING THE IDEA OF LOADING DOWN TO TIER III RUGER 45 COLT LEVELS, LESS POWDER, MORE BULLETS TO CHOOSE FROM, HAVE PLENTY OF REM 7 1/2 PRIMERS, AND PLENTY POWERFUL ENUFF FOR DEER HUNTING.

I'm in the market for a 454, any durability issues with a Ruger Blackhawk over the FA 83?

Agreed. If you want A 454 and you want to appreciate the full range of power this cartridge is capable of you want a freedom arms or BFR.

As a matter of curiosity, in your opinions what will be the first points of failure in a 454 Ruger SBH ?

As a matter of curiosity, in your opinions what will be the first points of failure in a 454 Ruger SBH ? I'm not sure if you would call it a failure. But, they just shake loose. I treat mine like a 5-Shot 45 Colt and have had zero issues. I do not buy the BS about not shooting 45 Colt in the gun. I've shot shorter cartridges in Magnum Guns since 1979 with zero problems. It does leave me wondering how people maintain their guns. That being said, to each their own. When my guns get shot, they get cleaned.

Thanks. At least one of the prototype testers told of looseness developing in the SBH's.
