A while back I had a fight on my hands with a pretty big boar, equipped with an m28 .357 Smith, (https://singleactions.proboards.com/thread/28883/hard-fought .) Though the job was done, it was a struggle, and by no means my proudest moment. After overfeeding and over hay'ing the herds yesterday, I was able to take the day off. In celebration of this, I took to the woods to see what none sense any hogs might be inflicting across an otherwise peaceful spread. While on foot, my general method for hunting them down is taking to the creek bottoms. As I hear them rooting, I will climb the steep bank and have at them. Today's encounter was one of those that inspires stiff hair on the back of one's neck. I poked my head over the bank and came within momentary eye contact of a large sow. I'd already shucked my wheelgun, and she was dead instantly. This prompted an abrupt dispersion among the remaining herd. I was able to take two more on the run before all target opportunities absconded. Each took one 260gr 429421 and gave up the ghost. The object of their object of demise was the ever familiar m21 .44spl, which I've posted about several times. All sows, the largest weighing at about 120. The other two, 75 and lower. Note: Two problems with this hunt- 1. I was equipped with a rifle as a small token of "just-in-case" insurance. It's presence invalidates this as an exclusive handgun hunt, even if it wasn't used. However, having experience large herds in close quarters, one can never be "too armed." Luckily, in this case, it was unnecessary. 2. This may be the first time I've ever been photographed in a ball cap. I cannot explain how this makes me feel; unsettled?

Excellent eating sized pigs, and things seemed more decisive with the 44.

Well done! Glad to see your back with the .44. When we walk the Wild Lands it pays to be ready for anything. The rifle was just insurance ,just like you keep on your truck for the unexpected. The hat doesn't define the man, its another tool we use.

Great story and some good shooting.... but my first reaction was “what’s with that cap???
Glad to see you’re back with “Ol’ Reliable”.

Good job on the pigs
I'm guessing that the hat discussion could end up looking like a Chili recipe discussion

Once I stopped wearing “ball caps” and started wearing full brim hats, be they Boonie hats or Cowboy hats I never went back to a ball cap. Work doesn’t allow a cowboy hat so a Boonie is what must be worn there, otherwise it’s either a straw or a felt. Protecting the ears and back of neck is a must if any concern for skin cancer is there.

I have nothing against a cap, per say. Trapr and I think alike;m, the objection being based on practicality. Every old puncher or rancher in this part of the country has roasted ears, nose and neck. A wide brim will hopefully help me avoid the same fate as I reach their age.

A belt and suspenders will make more sense to you as you age also. Hope you carry ear plugs with you also. Gotta protect the inside as well as the outside of those ears.
