I am wondering how no one has mentioned the famous (infamous?) Smith 28 Highway Patrolman. Well, that I saw anyhow. Another post (and I am paraphrasing here) says something to the effect of "not right for small game, not enough for big game". Yeah, I can see that. More blast and recoil than you need to dispatch varmints, less bullet weight than you need for large game. But for the average person, it balances bullet energy with controllable recoil; not to mention flattening trajectory to a degree. Is it the "perfect" cartridge? Maybe yes, maybe no. But is it the best we have for all round woods carry? Well, its better than most.

I don't shoot 357 much but have a feeling I will now that components are in short supply. A lot less power in a 357 vs a 500L! Having said that, I only have one 357 but it's my understanding that it is "a favorite" amongst some. 27-2 with 3T's Well, 2T's I suppose since it has with PachGrips 357 next to the "powder/lead hog"

Snyd, that is exactly what I’m trying to put together for a good light game gun, I’ve got the barrel I just need the rest.

Trapr If I had gotten this gun under a different set of circumstances I'd be willing to sell it. But I got it from a good friend a few years back and since then he lost his battle with cancer. RIP John. When he showed it to me my first thought/reaction was the 8 3/8" barrel was too long and it would be unwieldy. But then I held it and the lights came on. It's got a great feel. I do like shooting it. compared to the bigbore full house hunting loads it's like shooting a pop-gun!

First handgun I ever shot was an OM 44 Mag SBH. The ol' man didn't believe in wasting the potential of the cartridge and loaded it like he was trying to get rid of powder. He despised the 357 Magnum, so I never got to shoot one until I was on my own and bought my first handgun myself.
My first personally purchased handgun was a spankin' new stainless Security Six, six-inch. I wasn't sure about the cartridge, but I fell in love with the gun itself - it was like a 22 compared to the SBH, so I decided to try it.
I came to despise the 357 Mag myself. What an obnoxious little beast to set off at arms' length in front of your face! YES, I DID cut my teeth on max loads in the 44 Mag, but this little &^$%# was the most offensive thing I'd ever encountered, yet held onto.
Several on again - off again runs with the little monster taught me little by little that Just because the case would TAKE that much H110 or WC820 didn't mean I HAD to USE that much. As I got back into casting as I acquired my own gear, things got better, but then the "cheap" Ruger DAs started getting harder to find. I got behind in enjoying life because of school and work and ten years got by me quickly. The old Ruger DAs are much harder to find and sometimes are offered at four times the $150 I used to pay for a really nice used one.
OK, long story I should truncate NOW.
My current personal favorite (don't laugh) is a stainless, 3", five-shot Charter Arms Bulldog - "high-polish" to boot. OK, go ahead and laugh - it keeps their prices within my reach.
Yeah, I love the Charter design, especially for something I have to carry discretely. They've always been very accurate - WITHOUT the "qualifiers" of "for what they cost" or for what they are." Most have shot as well as anything I've owned - but they're definitely NOT as easy to shoot well. I've also NEVER had one "shoot loose," fall apart or "blow-up" on me as I've read in many other poor chaps' conjectural statements online, like "carry a lot and shoot a little." I'm very sick of that one in particular. I've not shot a 357 Charter with boxes and boxes of pre-1990s factory loads, but I'm betting it'd fare less well than an SP101, no doubt, but even that's speculation too on my part. MOST guns that size/weight won't last as long as a full-sized gun shooting quantities of max loads.
Anyway, another favorite would be the stainless, 4" Service Six I promptly turned into a Speed Six with hacksaw and file, with intentions of cutting the barrel to 3" before I was laid off suddenly and needed to pare down steel and shore up cash.
And, another favorite - the 3" SP101.
Even though this current-production Charter has been a little PIG, requiring a "trip back" and hours of my own work, I still love the platform. That 1990s SP101 I had required significant attention too, so to be fair..... Only thing any of the older "Sixes" needed was a bit of smoothing up. ALL were accurate, dead-reliable and RUGGED.
I think the SP101 and Charter Bulldog are about as big a gun as I want for the 357.
I've had several OM 357 Blackhawks and it felt like too much steel to tote for the little cartridge for me. The one I kept isn't a 357 any more though.
OK, one last thing: My ABSOLUTE most FAVORITE 357 Mag of all is not a revolver, or even an auto - or a handgun at all! The 357, to me, is about the most perfect "carbine" cartridge ever dreamed up for general purpose utility, versatility and FUN. So, that's really why I have a 357 revolver at all anyway, and I shoot more 357 than all other cartridges combined though both revolver and carbine.

How about 357s we might not really like but really enjoying shooting.. Worst thing about this 8 shot Redhawk is that I run out of air before it is empty!
