I am just curious to see if anyone has taken any deer with the littlest true magnum and how the 327 Federal does on them. Please state gun and loads used, range, and your general impression of how it performs. Thanks.

I HAVE READ OF A VERY, VERY FEW HERE ON SINGLEACTIONS AND/OR HANDGUNHUNT, MAY BE 1 OR 2 WITH A REVOLVER AND MAYBE 1 OR 2 WITH A CONTENDER OR ENCORE. THE 327 CAN DO IT BUT I HAVE YET TO CARRY ONE OF MY 327 REVOLVERS FOR DEER HUNTING.

Mostly just curious about how it works. I've taken deer with hot 38special, 158-180@1000+, inside 20 yds, as targets of opportunity. My usual minimum is heavy 357 mag. 44 is my normal primary for deer and pigs, but the 357 will get it done. I just question the small diameter and comparatively light bullets ability to get it done reliably, no matter how much the paper numbers say they are even.

I think ole Sixshot got a antelope 2 years ago with a 140gr Ferminator bullet. Seemed to work quite well as I recall...

A few years ago there was a guy on castboolits that got a deer with his 327 revolver... but was actually using 32 H&R mag ammo from Buffalo Bore at the time.

When the S7 first came out I recall a gun writer taking a doe with one. it worked well I believe but that’s all I remember about the story.
one of my goals is to take a deer with every handgun I own (not counting the 22’s of course) so eventually my S7 will draw blood. Gonna take my time though and wait for the right shot. not a lot of leeway with them small slugs.

Evev though he claims it would have been a one shot kill, he also described the wounds where bone was hit as being unimpressive.

Gonna take my time though and wait for the right shot. not a lot of leeway with them small slugs. I think you are referring to Richard Mann, he has reported taking a couple of deer and Javalinas with the 32 and 327 in wheel guns and a custom Marlin lever action. I think they were all shot with 130gr Buffalo Bore cast bullets and reported them doing just fine. I have personally run 100gr XTP bullets hard in the S7 and while they have been very accurate and very fast I have noticed the steel plate hardly move when struck with one, heavy cast bullets move the plates more and there is a louder clank to the hits. I wonder if the XTP would hold up to the 327 velocities on game? It predates the cartridge and was designed for the 32 mag when velocities were kept well below what we are seeing today. My steel clang test isnt exactly scientific but I think it points a potential issue out. That other string really said all I can say, I havnt bloodied my 327 S7 Bisleys on too much, a handful of ground squirrels is all. The load has been a very soft alloyed 130gr bullet from the Miha Mjolnir hammer bullet that was a group buy here. I will say the damage done to the vermin was remarkable, but again the bullets were deliberately cast soft. In a S7 it was created to be as big and cylinder filling as possible in that short cylinder, cast harder and with a solid nose or perhaps the cup nose I think it would put the 327s best foot forwards in a S7 gun. The 135gr Ferminator bullet, with its much longer nose and more powder space would be the best bullet in longer cylindered guns. I have leaned on it in my Buckeye and the 32/20 cylinder and gotten some remarkable velocities and accuracy from the gun, but that is a big package to pack around the woods and probably would end up left at home most of the time. I sort of wish we had a stead supply of feral hogs to work these little bullets on and really learn something. OK Im certainly glad they are not here in Colorado yet but you get the idea. I do think anyway you slice it you would be sending a boy to do a mans job if you try and kill deer with a 327, It will probably work but it wouldn't be optimal of course...

As I have said before I have taken a few deer with my 38special when it's all I had with me and an ideal opportunity presented itself. I load a 60/40 coww/soww plus1% tin 358429hp over 5gr 231 for 1065 from my k38. On broadside lungs, it exits. After looking at the photos in the links above and comparing the lung damage in them, it looks like the slower 38 still does more damage. And no I don't shoot that load much in my k frame.

Not a deer but I did take this doe antelope 2 years ago with my 8 shot 327 Blackhawk. I was using a 135 gr GC HP Ferinator bullet, which is a long bullet & won't fit in a lot of 327's but works fine in the long cylinder of the Blackhawk & the Buckeye six guns. I also have a Buckeye in 32-20 that shoots this bullet very well. My load, not your load until you work up to it with the Ferminator bullet is 13.0 grs of H110 & a SP primer in Starline brass. Don't remember the velocity right now but the distance was 74 yds broadside with an exit. It hit her really hard, she got turned around & took maybe 6-7 steps & dropped What makes this bullet work is that long shank, it holds up really well, at least it did on this antelope. The very nice holster is by the old master, Mike "Doc" Barranti & I made the Amboyna Burl stocks. I don't usually keep notes, the shot might have been 78 yds, doesn' matter. Dick

GOOD PICTURES, GREAT SHOT, EXCELLENT REPORT, BEAUTIFUL GRIPS, PRETTY AND PRACTICAL HOLSTER; I HAVE A STASH OF THOSE FERMINATOR BULLETS THAT I AM GOING TO TRY IN A BUCKEYE 32-20.

Dick, Do you remember the alloy you were using? I love that bullet! My mold has a fat shank and makes the GC's entertaining but it's still a favorite. I'm within a couple tenths of H110 of your load and it's nice.

dhd, I usually use a 70/30 mix of wheel weights & lead & I drop a couple of think pieces of linotype in for a little extra tin. This works good for me with a GC bullet, especially matching it up with powder coating. This load is really scooting yet it's very accurate, doesn't lead & is easy to cast. Not sure what you mean by the GC being intertaining with your mold? Is it hard to seat?
