Asking because I discovered a couple weeks ago that all my POIs were very very different from when sighting in on my CTK compact pistol rest with the bottom of the gripframe on the rear platform that when not or when shooting off my shooting sticks or my knees. Very glad I checked! It was the day before gun season. In previous years I’ve always used shooting sticks. I’m wondering how shooting off a backpack prone at long distance compares for POI? What’s your sight in method? This is a stock photo of my rest used for accuracy testing btw

I rest the frame on either my sticks, or rest and support the grip in my hands with no other contact to a solid object. This way my shots land to same POI regardless of situation, if I’m in the field I can use a branch or window edge and pad it with leather gloves and accomplish the same effect. Shots also land differently when I change from rested to offhand.
consistency is the key, choose whatever method you prefer but do it the same every time

I am not a very good pistol shot off hand and sight in all my pistols off a rest. That is how I'm gonna shoot out of deer stand so I practice that way on steel targets or shooting groups. I do rest the frame on some type of rest or sand bag. Got to hang on to the 500jrh finally ventured into the upper loads the other day with 296 got a lil lax on one shot and kissed the brim of ball cap.

Keith seated position just like I use alot hunting for irons. Scopes from a set of shooting sticks only contacting the frame just like I hunt. Then try various field positions and rests to verify and practice how I will be using it.

Sandbags... but I rest my wrists/forearms on them instead of the gun.

Contact at the rear of the grip frame is very bad for me.

Recall hearing that grip frame contact may cause your grips to chip or crack.
I've been reading up on 22LR rifles & events which has exposed me to a variety of "modern" shooting bags. Some are very interesting/ingenious & lightweight. Some of the fillers are Airsoft BB's or some lightweight fiber fill. There are a few small bags that have a clip affixed to the end to attach to a belt loop, pack, etc.
Several Youtube videos on DIY bags. A pair of heavy socks & some Airsoft BB's would be easy & lightweight.

I did crack a set of the white grip scales on my BFR in 500 JRH, on a cold day, where I let the grip bottom touch the shooting bench... for most of my hunting revolvers, I prefer to rest my wrists or hands on some rest, with nothing else touching the gun itself...

I live in the forest, so I lean on a tree, with my shoulder and upper arm, don’t rest your hand or gun on anything as you probably won’t do that while hunting.
