I’d avoid the USPS like the COVID virus.

You could put in the listing buyer pays actual shipping cost but that'd turn into a PITA when someone wants to know to the penny what it costs. I've been perturbed by shipping costs but hey, I got the gun.

I've been perturbed by shipping costs but hey, I got the gun. That is what I did on the first one, but I never thought it would be $130. I felt a duty to get the best deal that I could. It doesn’t help when the buyer doesn’t know the rules, and has poor reading comprehension. I think I got a hard one. Hopefully they will get easier.

So the person with the opening bid on the second one has NR next to his name. Does this just mean not rated because he hasn’t bought anything yet. It says he joined 15 days ago. Is this a red flag?

Everyone that joins Gunbroker, has to start from zero. That doesn’t mean they are scammers. That being said, when I asked a lister for some info and a specific picture, they told me “no more info, do not contact me” kinda hard to agree with, when you list a $3,500 custom with two bad pictures that don’t show much, and a very generic description. Buyer beware! If the person is willing to discuss shipping thru an FFL, I send payment thru the FFL in the listers name. A responsible dealer won’t get involved in a scam. Just my experience.

Bids on high ticket items from recently created bidder accounts can be, and often are shill bidders.
Especially where you see shill bids along with a seller refusing to engage with information or imagery of details, consider the deal to be suspect.

Also
Double plus emphasis on insurance when shipping. Put the in writing in your description of shipping protocol. Explain that as part of the shipping cost.
Especially nowadays, loss of guns in shipping happens. It happens more than you'd want to think it does.

I've sold 6 rifles and some gun parts on Gun Broker, and I've been amazed after each sale of how easy it's been. Never had a bad experience. I ship only FedEx. USPS is more expensive and they are picky about packaging. I try and keep my shipping price at $25. I take the best pics that I can, and lots of them, and am always eager to send more if asked to. I answer questions honestly and fast. I only accept USPS MOs, and have the seller send it in a priority mail large envelope which allows both me and buyer to track the MO. If you have any doubt about the MO, visit the post office, they can check on it. I use a few of the auction add ons, to catch someone's eye, like featured listing, colored titles, things like that, but I don't go overboard. I do the 'counter' thing as well. I describe in detail every single flaw, mark, scratch, whatever, and again, take good photos of such. I always sell 'as is' and no returns for firearms. Last thing, I never list ammo. There are lots of steps to take to do it legally. I understand FedEx has a whole new set of rules that apply after the 1st of the year, which includes, if I read it right, 'training' for whoever packages the stuff up. And, too, the marking on the packaging is changing as well. Have to add that I have no experience in selling handguns on GB. Sorry so long winded. hope this helps.

This is why lots of folks won't sell to AK or HI.
I can send a revolver myself with $3-4K worth of insurance FedEx Express Saver (still air) for about $65 +/- to most anywhere in the CONUS.
The insurance is what gets expensive. If it's going to a home you have to pay for a signature. If the receiving FFL has a business address the signature comes with $500 worth of insurance.

Before I retired I did a lot of shipping for my employer. Fedex takes better care of packages than does UPS or USPS and they are more likely to arrive on time as well. Insurance (declared value) may give you a warm fuzzy feeling but making a claim is a pain and usually disappointing. You have to prove the item was worth the declared value and your sales price won't do it. By the way, GB will begin collecting sales tax on Jan. 1. That may put a damper on things for awhile until users get used to the idea.

If you list, spend the fifty cents on the view counter. If you're expecting 500 dollars and you're at fifty three days later and you see two hundred people have looked at it, you might need to change something. End your auction at least a week later on a Sunday night. Some fellas love beer.

I have seen people post on GB that they won't be collecting sales tax as they are private sellers. Is anyone well versed on this tax process?

I have one that sold on jan. 1. The listing changed to sales tax will be collected based on buyers location. They haven’t added it to my invoice. I am thinking that I will probably be charged for it. They may charge the buyer, but I am going to see how it plays out. I will post when I know the deal. There is only 2 options for sales tax. Either you don’t collect it. or you do based on your location. We don’t have sales tax in my state.

GB posted a list of states where tax will be collected. I'm guessing private or corporate, if your item sells in that state you will be charged sales tax.
