I just got word that my daughter in law took her first elk today on a NM cow tag she drew. I don't know the details yet but I posted a week or so ago about my son calling and needing 7mm-08 ammo for the little Youth model 7 rifle that both my boys took their first elk with since that was what Ashly would be using rather than the old 7 mag I passed on from my father to my son Remington. All I know is it was about a 50 yard shot and the picture looks like broad daylight in the picture of her setting on the cow and hanging on to the ears. Ashly grew up in Minnesota and her dad owns a sporting goods store so hunting is as much a tradition for her as it is for my son but I think this may be the first big game animal she has taken. I know it is for sure the first elk. Rem sent me a picture and I downloaded it so I could share it but once I download it the computer says it can not open the image. I will post a picture once I figure it out.

The magnificent 7mm-08 is all a person needs for almost all hunting.

A younger member of our camp got one a couple of years ago . It manages to keep a freezer full all by itself. Is it just me, or..looking at charts, it seems to be loaded a bit sedately ?

For some reason a very under rated caliber. Lots of good 7mm bullets out there that make the 7-08 shine. Congratulations!!

Know your limitations, she did as in 7-08 vs 7 mm mag. Shoot as much gun as you can shoot accurately ,she did that. Place a good bullet where it should go, she did that, dead elk. Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good for Ashley, 7mm-08 has taken a lot of Elk here in Idaho. I'm not even going to mention deer. I used to use the 145 Speer Grand Slam on elk, and if well hit they folded very quickly.

Congrats to her! Looking forward to the pics! I got a 7mm-08 years & years ago for my granddaughter to eventually use,, because I KNEW it to be a good all around choice for a young lady. (And many men too!)

I remember reading Layne Simpson's articles on the 7mm-08, and even the Model Seven rifle. If I didn't already have a 30-06 I would have picked up the 7-08.
Great job on the elk, Ashly!

Here is Ashly with your cow. She got it at 4:00 and they had it skinned (she wants the hide tanned, butchered and in the rig by 7:15. Luckily my son is getting pretty good at maneuvering his little SUV through old logging roads and they were able to get to within 50 yards. I guess she had to stay on target for several minutes until the spike bull stepped away from hiding behind the cow. She was afraid of a pass through and two for one situation. She held a little far forward and busted up the shoulder simply because of the time of day and need to anchor the cow right there. At the shot she turned 180* and dropped they said. Yes camo is curtesy of our Uncle Sam.

Luckily dark elk does not equate to dark salmon!
