Consistency is key in that sport. Grips like that, through their design, make gripping the gun more consistent / repeatable on demand.

By the time I started shooting matches in '78 the revolvers were pretty much gone. Revolvers were never seen in military matches and only once in a blue moon a civilian match. We did see these type grips on semi autos but personally never saw a set on a revolver in a match. Now when it comes down to actually playing with the ones made by Herrett, Tyler, and Siles on revolvers I find them acceptable for slow fire. Timed and rapid fire is a different matter. My thumb just doesn't want to reach the hammer. I always liked the looks of the King's offset hammers but now better understand the need for them.
