Just a personal preference thing, so take it with a grain of salt; I'm not much of a Ruger rifle fan, but one of my favorite rifle sis a Boat Paddle SS in .223. Just loves that cheap Winchester white box bulk ammo. My go to prairie dog rifle!
That will make a fine 7x57. You gonna install sights?

naw... all the rest of my stainless hunting rifles wear good glass, most are 4-12X... old eyes ya know... I do have a couple Aperture / Globe sights on my competition Muzzle loader, & a few of my Single Shots...( that's why I especially liked that 3rd rifle pictured )... but I also have a couple 15X & 20X Unertl external adjust scopes for my old single shots as well... my eyes aren't terrible yet... but another 5-10 years I'm sure I'll be needing a steady rest to help with the tremors that run in the family on moms side, & scopes for my diminishing eye sight... this will only be my 2nd Ruger rifle in the "hunting" rack... ( thinking about it... they may be my only Ruger Rifles... that is until they start making the Marlin Lever Actions in 480 )... before the sell off... Remington 700's accounted for about half... now I'm pretty well split on the big 3-4 brands... hmmm... thinking about it I may have sold off all the Winchesters??? 17 Mach 2... Custom Marlin Bolt action ( this one is blued... but it's my squirrel & coon buster for around the yard ) 17 Fireball... Custom Remington 700 243... Ruger M-77 Boatpaddle New, 7 Mauser Ruger M-77 Boatpaddle 30-06... Remington 700 100th Anniversary of the 30-06 338 win Mag... Browning A Bolt Stainless Stalker 416 Rigby... Custom Enfield This list should cover most anything I need an all weather rifle for... and there are plenty of other calibers in other rifle racks... like my stainless Guide Gun in 45-70, or my Gunsite Scout ( ooops that's another Ruger isn't it ) in 308, or...

MW, who is going to rebarrel the Ruger action? I dont anything about that paddle stock other than it being plastic. Are they a good candidate for pillars?

Hey Zir, you build rifles for a living or a hobby? That "Built this little gem for a customer some years back, Open sights only, barely 6.5 lbs" is exactly what I want. maybe do a barrel band sling and express sights.

Howdy, I did build custom rifles for a good stretch of time but am currently out of the game. mccabeguns.com

Flame Maple board showed up yesterday... looks pretty nice... but whiter than in the pictures... thinking the seller took the picture I posted in the dark, with a flask to bring out the color it has... interestingly when the board came in "cold" from the delivery truck... the stripes were not as pronounced... as it warmed up they started popping out...
not sure if I want to let the finish add depth of color, or if it would benefit from a very light brown, honey colored stain, before finishing... I'll let Zane figure that out... he's busy for several months, but has agreed to make me the inserts, & was interested in getting some extra wood for future projects... so thinking I'll send him the stock, & half the board, in the next couple weeks...

Does chromium trioxide work on maple like it does on birch? Or would it turn everything much too dark. It's nasty nasty stuff, but it does wonders for tiger stripe.

After how well it worked on the M14 stock, I tried it on a walnut M1 stock. It brought them out a little more, but nothing like the birch.

I have A old FN Mil surp 7X57 , that I got very cheap. I had a CZ Full Stock, that shot lights out, But I got poor Velocity out of the 20 inch barrel. So sold it and Got a #1A just like in the picture. It shot great too ! and fast. But never liked it in the field. So I sold it too. This old FN Shoots well. Has a 24 inch light barrel. Very fast. I put a old gloss 3X9 Leopold on it. It will not shoot Boat tails very well. But flat base bullets ! it loves them...tj
