It is so pretty I can't decide if i should carry it or make a few bucks on it ! It is a Colt Detective special 38 special. Have not found out the year yet, Cant find my little blue Colt book, S#821xxx. My guess is 60s, it has the bare ejector rod , so it can't be much newer. I answered a local add, the guy add said unfired, since new. He was selling his brothers estate. I drove to the guys house skeptical of the unfired since new claim, But holding the gun in my hand , there is a very faint dragline present , but i mean very faint, and the chamber mouths have a light ring too, so i doubt it is unfired but it might be. It came with an excellent old Lawrence Thumb break hip holster, that is very like new too ! I paid the asking price of 750.00 without hesitation. Even with no box that is a great price. I think i know a guy who would give me a grand for it now. But i decided to sit on it for a week and carry it around the house and see how comfortable it is. The action is as it should be. A side note, on the way home I stopped at a place called Oregon Rifle Works, to see if they had any .38 ammo, they didn't but they had a very pretty 4" Diamondback .38 For 900.00. I was tempted to run over and try to sell The one i just bought, for a grand run back and buy the Diamondback , With the 100 left over i would only be out 650.00 for the Diamondback . But i decided no, this little guy fills a void in my collection for a compact carry revolver. PS, if i remember correctly this thing is NOT good for plus P. Am i right ? ...tj3006

Think I would have to of had the Diamondback also. Then you could call yourself a Colt collector too. Hmmm , seems you were just ruminating about a Diamondback 32 conversion . Hmmmmmm.

A little research tells me my new Colt is from 1963 2nd model i think ! Needsmostuff says he would have had the Diamondback also, and I do not blame him one bit for being brave with my money, as I would cheerfully spend his also , with no regrets at all !...tj

I was thinking i would do the smart thing, and wait till I had fired the revolver, before I ordered a holster But dang i just had to have an inside the pants version, So a simply Rugged, pancake , with belt straps Black , with Border stamping is on the way ! ...tj

Needsmostuff says he would have had the Diamondback also, and I do not blame him one bit for being brave with my money, Having just suffered the slings and arrows of withering enabling crossfire on another site (I buckled and have a new gun)I felt compelled . My pocket is now shorter on funds but can still enjoy the vicarious purchasing joy of enabling others . Say,,,,, you could put the Diamondback on lay-away,,,,,,He he he !

I haven't seen a Diamondback at that price in 10 years. I am a big fan of that particular snake gun. The balance for me is of particular joy. It just feels perfect in my hand. Add to that the incredible fit and the beautiful finish of liquid blue and you have a winner.
All of mine are more accurate than I am.
The Detective Special has just not lit my fire in years. At one point, I liked the small concealable snubbies, but life changed and I now quest for long barrels and silhouette type hawglegs.
Variety is the spice of life, so enjoy what you makes you happy. How many other countries on the planet have ever allowed their subjects on this pursuit?

I shot the Detective Special today ! I am left with a good impression. 1st 2 inch barreled revolver shooting in double action is not easy. I put 2 plastic pop bottles on a log with a cardboard back. I Dumped six rounds at about 30 feet, hit both bottles early on, but in repeating the drill I must admit I missed a bunch. But the holes in the cardboard made it clear I would have been hitting a man sized target. I then, just as a test Fired 6 rounds single action at a spot on the box still at about 30 feet. 4 holes in a vertical string touching and 2 holes to the left an inch or two from the string. This is a very good quality revolver. I will practice the double action, and point shooting with it , but single action even with a 2 inch .38 it is surprising how precise one can be. Still The gun is good for what is designed for, to get you out of trouble at close range. In the woods there are much better choices....tj

It's not unusual to find me packing my daily carry in the woods either! 3" adj sight sp101. Had to slick up it's horrible factory action, but with 125gr fiocchi +p 38 it groups good at 25 yards now. 158hp 357 is more lively, but gives 2" at 25 yards.

Well big bore, i can't see packing my little colt in the forest when i have 4 .357s as well as a single 7 in .327 federal, witch are just much more versatile guns. But thats just my point of view, I do see the value of concealing your gun in the woods. Cause there are bad people out there too. ...tj

I had a nice DS back in the 80s and it shot way high with all loads. Didn't know this was a common ailment for the 3rd iteration of that model. I wish I would have known how Colt fixed the problem. The boys on the Colt Forum say that "Colt put the front sight in a vise and squeezed it and made it taller, therefore lower the point of impact". Mine shot 4 feet high at 25 yards with a 158grain lead SWC. Unfortunately I dumped it from being my favorite off duty piece. What a simple fix, but that gun was easy to carry and gorgeous to look at.

Zeke, I went through a few of those 80s Versions, of the Detective Special. Can't remember any particular point on impact issues. But i had one that had one Chamber that was to tight to except a factory .38. When i was young AKA poor. I liked the Officers Model .45 When times were good i carried the .45. When i got short of cash i could sell the .45 get a .38 and pocket 200 or so...tj

Colt45s were always spendy, but not always reliable or accurate. I carried two Colts as a Deputy Sheriff working drugs: A Gold Cup with hardball or a LW Commander with harball. When I would do a prisoner detail (interstate transfer, one deputy, one patrol car and a bad guy chained up in the back) it was always LW Commander in a horizontal Alessi rig and a Colt DS/Cobra in an ankle holster. The Cobra was a real shooter with 38 wadcutters. The Commander had a Smith and Wesson rear sight inlaid in the slide and ambi safeties as I am in my right mind. Cobra was on my right ankle.

I tuck it in an iwb sometimes, but it's in a shoulder holster mostly to protect it from getting hung up on brush, etc..
