I often carry some sort of knife too. At work i can't carry a gun, but almost always have a buck knife on me. I reasoned many years ago that if some body reached into my truck, either my own or the company truck , I would try and slit his wrist, across, and tell him if he did not go to a hospital fast he might bleed to death. And if some fool were to start punching me, I would use my blade to block a punch or two. The Guy might lose a finger or two and would need to be stitched up almost certainly. I think it would likely take the fight out of them quick , And with all his cut's being on his fists and maybe his arms, as evidence to who was trying to hit who ,I think I have a decent defense ! ...tj

If I think there's a chance I'm going to get into a tussle, I just wear this out for the day... Oh, and I also carry a knife in addition to my ccw tj.

I bought two boxes of goose steel loads at Academy. The nice lady triple bagged them for me. When I came out of the store to the parking lot, someone was trying to get into my truck. Since I dont carry all the time (this time I was not carrying); I ran up behind him and started using the two boxes of ammo in the sacks as a flail. Hit him hard enough there was blood splatter on my truck when the police got there. Mr. Badguy was laying on the ground and several bystanders were there with their CCWs (conceal carry weapons) to help me out. During the fight the bags ripped open and 12 gauge ammo was lying all over the parking lot. I did have a fixed blade on me but never thought to use it. Then I had to pick up all that ammo.

Where do you folks live???
Maybe I'm just out of touch and if I drive 1.5hrs South to Albuquerque I guess I wouldn't be surprised by something like the above.

I’m less than an hour south of weird world Portland and I always have at least one auto knife on me and often a second large folder. This is in addition to either the Kahr tucked in whatever holster is appropriate for where I am or the 1911 truck gun just inches from my right hand. I have only had to show I has armed truce but both times the presence of the firearm gave the bad guy pause to decide to go elsewhere.

TJ3006, unless you have witnesses, the thugs hand/arm wounds will be portrayed as defensive wounds, and show you to be the perp.. just sayin'. Had a blade course, knife fighting not the duel kinda thing most think, mostly to keep the blade away from you until you can break contact or deploy a weapon of your own. Glad it went well. I do think we do or should have the right to defend our property. Not just our lives. Not a popular opinion at the moment.

best weapon I carry, is between my ears... be wary... even the gun will do you no good if the bad guy is in your personal space with a weapon, before you can draw... everything can be a weapon... even the ammo without the gun to fire it

There's also a 6" camping/survival knife in the door of the car, and a full size gun in the glove box... 2 compact guns on my person. When the Rodney King riots were going down and I had to be in Portland the FN49 sat behind the truck seat, loaded with 198 grain steel core Egyptian military ammo... 10 shots semi-auto, quick and hard. That stuff sails through 5/8" steel like a .22 through an aluminum coke can. I stay away from Portland these days.

Bula, If the cuts are mostly on the other guys fists, not his palms, I looks a lot les like defensive wounds...

Gonna be wishing you had a FNAR or a SCAR. Thieves target sporting goods store parking lots because they figure there are weapons in the vehicles.

Speaking of improvised weaponry, when I was a Police Firearms Instructor one of the statistics that amazed me concerning police weapons utilization was/is: The Police Flashlight. Most commonly used article of police weaponry! It's always in their hands, when fisticuffs erupted, Spent a reasonable amount of time teaching Impact weapons. Flashlights were always an addressed subject. I still carry a small light that has an aluminium body, handy for a lot of things.

When I was a LEO the laws in Texas had just changed to where using a flashlight as an impact weapon was the same level of force as pulling a handgun. Apparently someone got a little over zealous and either killed someone or seriously injured them. It was kinda funny watching my field training officers "persuade" someones cooperation then utter a short expletive and tell me "You didn't see that.". My response was "Didn't see a thing Sargent." But they never hurt anyone, it was as it was intended; a little thump to get their attention.
In an 18 wheeler accident I found a guy with about an 18 inch piece of 1 1/4 diameter fuel hose, blocked off on both ends with about a pound of birdshot inside it. I thought it was rather forward thinking.

I reasoned many years ago that if some body reached into my truck, either my own or the company truck , I would try and slit his wrist, across, and tell him if he did not go to a hospital fast he might bleed to death....tj ...it does work...if you are fast enough. I spent August 2001 visiting a friend in South Africa who had been with the South African Police for 19 years before opening his own security training facility. It was a BIG place...a four story warehouse in Durban with three ranges and 3K students a year graduating. Everything from parking lot guards to cash-in-transit (armor car) guards he trained. There was like 30 instructors. We went on a tour of the country from Durban to Cape Town, Kimberly, Jo'Berg and back... Most of the time he had me carrying a Tokarov to back up his 1911. How he got the Tok was interesting "story"... He was sitting doing surveillance in a dark area...right hand drive truck with the window down. He was eating biltog (wild meat jerkey), the meat in his right hand and knife cutting off pieces in his left...he was left handed. At which point he feels the muzzle of a gun pressed to his right temple... I spent 30 years in LE and another 5 as a PI...and can say without hesitation this guy was THE toughest individual I have ever know...he was also as fast a mongoose. And big as a cape buffalo. His nickname on the street was Buffalo. In a flash his right hand dropped the meat and grabbed the guys hand pulling the arm into through the window. The knife then sliced the forearm and the gun dropped between the seats...Mr. Badguy ran off screaming like a stuck pig...that was my carry gun while in SA... True or not, you would never call this guy a liar to his face... SA is worse than the Wild West on a bad day.... Bob

If you can find a Filipino martial arts school in your area, join. Kali is from of the most violent slums in the world in its modern additions. The knife is it's key weapon along with the baton. It has several times saved me in bad situations from Somalia to New Orleans. Watch some of Guru Doug Marcaida's videos on YouTube. I first encountered kali at Benning for jump school. Nasty stuff. But has served well. Fun too.
