Was able to get a mule deer with the 500 JRH hunting with a friend a few weeks ago. He shot a dandy doe with his 500Linbaugh.

Well done, that looks like some tough country for a handgun hunt, wide open space, you must be a true marksman, and better hunter, congratulations.

You’re having a heck of a year with your handguns. Congrats again...
Why the 500 on a little old mule deer and the 45 colt on the elk?

45 is plenty of gun for elk I guess. It shoots flatter and is easier to shoot accurately. I might ruffle a few feathers and I am speaking in generally.... but the 500 is kinda a novelty in ND. You don’t NEED one........ well... I guess I do. I have shot more prairie dogs with it than anything! But I have shot a few deer and finished a moose with it.
I guess I did the elk with 45 cause it was in bigger country and I trust it more. The BFR has let me down a time or two with reliability. Mostly my fault.

Actually that wide open is easy to spot and stalk in. Much easier than trees. We don’t kill much in the trees. Way more in the open. Bout have to drive the trees but you can hunt very effectively in the open alone or together. Thing is the game can’t see through the ground as you work your way to them.

We most likely could take any one of you out in that country and get you within 150 to 200 yd of any deer. Then it’s just a matter of using cover and terrain to close the distance. Sometimes it doesn’t work the first time but with plentiful game and time for another stalk usually success comes.
