One I couldn't have....

My old TDE Automag, in .357AMP. The thing would shoot like a rifle, but if I could get 5 rounds to fire in a row with that thing, it was a miracle! I owned it for 5 years, and in that time I killed 12 whitetail deer with it. I hear the new ones are bullet-proof, and the problems with the old ones were apparently the MAGAZINES, according to the manufactors of the new ones.

Jamma-matic, broken bolt, broken locking lug, broken bolt guide ring on receiver, some of the hardware & heat treatment, etc. Sold mine before silhouette came along. Quite a few on the line during the early days. Fired as a single shot until introduction of rule, a repeater Production gun had to be fired as a repeater. Un-reliability and the high cost of replacement parts doomed the Auto Mag as a silhouette gun. Reliability claims for the new Auto Mag .44----haven’t seen one----are for this shooter not to be believed without witness. All you need is ONE FAILURE in 55 years to fall behind my first Model 29. David, I agree. Although I never broke anything on mine, my cousins .44AMP broke the rear "ears" on the bolt, his rear sight came apart and had to be replaced. We were partners in buying & selling Automags, and we bought lots of stuff from Lee Jurras, and Kent Lomont. Kent was probably the most knowledgeable man about those pistols. I loved mine, in spite of all its failures. Of course, I wish I had it back. I only paid $375.00 for mine at McBrides Guns, in Austin. But, man, we couldn't hardly GIVE those damn things away!

A first production, stainless Ruger Mini-14. I mounted a stainless Weaver 4x with a stainless B Square QD mount. It was a symphony in stainless sexiness.
I could have achieved tighter groups with a homemade boomerang.

hughree, I agree! I had one of those turds, mine had the folding stock, but man, that thing shot PATTERNS at 100 yard. I did kill a rattlesnake that was scaring my daughters pony, he was only about 10 feet away, but it still took TWO shots at that distance! First & only one of those I ever owned.

I could have achieved tighter groups with a homemade boomerang. ***** Had and wish I hadn’t sold, the semi-auto version of the KAC 556 stainless Mini 14 with flash hider & bayonet lug, M-1 style front sight, and Ruger folding stock. Prone @ 200 meters, 5x5 stitched tight as the palm of your hand with Federal ball ammo. Repeated that performance in Ruger’s New Hampshire back yard while shooting a couple of his select fire rifles, a beautiful Valmet Kalashnikov 7.62x 39mm, and Swiss .308 marriage of Heckler & Koch G3 with gas operation. Shot 20 rounds groups, prone, with all three. Most of the 60 shots would fit on a desert plate. Suspect Mini 14 barrels varied in quality. One thing is for certain: stock fit to the Mini 14 barreled action to stock makes or breaks accuracy from a good barrel. David Bradshaw

I finally came across a Colt SAA and 44 Special that I could afford a while back. It was a GB buy so I didn’t get to eyeball it in person. Except for thin bluing on the cylinder, It’s a beautiful gun, but the action is terrible. Very heavily sprung and the worst Taurus is probably smoother. On top of that my little finger rides the forward edge of the grip frame, which is sharp enough to be uncomfortable when shooting. This one was made in 1977.
My guns are shooters, and I’d like to have a couple of things done to this one. Black powder chamfer and rebuke the cylinder and round off that sharp edge on the grip frame. Plus a general once over for anything else it might need. I’m hoping that Mr Harton will fit it into his schedule.

You could shoot a 7 STW off a bench??!! I cant stand to shoot my 7 Rem Mag off a bench more than 2 rounds! I know recoil is subjective to the individual though. I had a Sendero in 7 STW, it was heavy enough that recoil wasn’t bad. I had a 338 rem 700 Mountain Rifle that nobody else would shoot more than once, but to me it kicked less than the two 7 RemMags I had, one was a Weatherby Vanguard that was just brutal. Had a plate and six screws installed in my neck about 12 years ago and don’t shoot any of the big boomers any more.

MY MOST RECENT DISAPPOINTING HANDGUN ACQUISITION IS A RUGER SP101 IN 327. FRONT SIGHT WAS WAY TOO HIGH, FIXED THAT THANKS TO A GOOD SAMARITAN ON THIS WEB SITE, BUT THE REVOLVER WAS ROUGHER/GRITTIER THAN MOST ANYTHING I CAN RECALL, SENT IT TO CLEMENTS FOR WORK, AND THE GUN IS STILL ROUGH, GRITTY, DIFFICULT EXTRACTION, A BIG, BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! I MAY HAVE TO RECONSIDER THE RUGER SP101 IN 327. I DID A LITTLE POLISHING OF THE CHAMBERS AND WENT OUT SUNDAY MORNING (3/14/21) IN 20mph WINDS TO SHOOT IT. FERDERAL FACTORY AE 100gr AMMO WAS STILL DIFFICULT TO EXTRACT, BUT A LITTLE BETTER THAN BEFORE. THEN I SHOT SOME RELOADS USING FEDERAL AE BRASS, CCI 500 PRIMERS, 7grs OF LONGSHOT AND 100gr XTP's. THIS LOAD CHRONO'ed OVER 1,500fps IN A 5.5 INCH MODEL 97. I WAS JUST SHOOTING AT METAL SPINNERS, OFF A REST, AT 25 YARDS BUT MAN DID THE SP101 SHOOT VERY ACCURATELY WITH THAT LOAD, PLUS EXTRACTION WAS A LOT BETTER THAN WITH THE FACTORY FEDERAL. WHEN I GOT HOME I POLISHED THE CHAMBERS SOME MORE, AND CHECKED AROUND FOR SOME HOLSTERS THAT WOULD WORK WITH THIS 4.2 INCH BARRELED SP101. BASICALLY HOLSTERS FOR K FRAME 4 & 5 INCH REVOLVERS WILL WORK VERY WELL WITH THIS REVOLVER, AND THANKS TO BEING A HOLSTER "PICKER" I HAVE A FEW THAT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE FOR ANY BBQ. LIKE PEOPLE, SOMETIMES GUNS NEED A SECOND CHANCE.

I agree. I shot the barrel out of a Remington Apache 77 clip fed 22. Stupid me, sold it thinking it was ruined. Now used barrels are 60 bucks with sights. Stupid stupid stupid of me. Green stock and all.
Custom 98K Mauser built into a 257 Roberts. Two and a half inch groups at 100 yards (handloads). Sold it off and the new owner pushed the bullets .008 deeper into the case and it shot 5 shots into 3/8ths of an inch. Wont sell it back if I was on the ground bleeding and that was the only thing to stop it. I would have to bleed to death.

1.) FA 97 44 Special - bloodied my hands every time I shot it with anything more than 8.0g of Power Pistol. I’ll add that the build quality and accuracy was exactly what you’d expect from FA - stellar! (FA 83s are my favorite guns of all time). 2.) Henry Big Boy 44 Magnum - first shot was always a flyer. I mean off the paper sometimes and into la la land at 50 yards. Next 4 were almost always touching at 50 yards, go figure. First one counts the most. Sold. 3.) Remington VSSF .204 - I foolishly sold my first VSSF in .223. Best factory rifle I’ve ever owned. The .204 couldn’t hit the broadside of a bulldozer (okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration). But it also wouldn’t stabilize any bullet over 35 grains. I told Remington C/S I bought the gun to shoot targets the size of Pepsi bottles at 300 yards. They said 3-4+” groups at 100 yards met their standards. Last Remington I ever purchased. 4.) Savage 110 SS 350 Legend - every 3rd or 4th shot the bolt froze shut. I had to beat the hell out of it to open it. I got through one box of ammo and returned the gun. The Ruger AR-556 350 Legend that replaced it is awesome. 5.) Ruger Mark III Target - ridiculously inaccurate. To be fair, it was used and it’s hard telling what might have happened to it. The good news is I sent it to Volquartsen and completely overhauled it. It will easily shoot 5 shots at 25 yards into one tiny hole that is no bigger than 1/4”. It’s my daughter’s favorite pistol now. I'm a .204 fan and ran into the accuracy problem with 40 grainers. That 12 twist works good for the 32 up to sometimes the 39 Blitzking, but not above usually. There were some 37 grain made to accommodate. Black Hole makes a copy I'm told. I had a Remington 700 and Kimber .204. The Kimber tack drove 32 grain NBT fed prem factory ammo and flat would not shoot a 40 NBT or VMAX. Remington shot 32 OK but not as good as Kimber, but shot 40s twice as good, but still not best. I checked the twist on both after finding out from other .204 guys that 12 twist is right on the ragged edge of usable with 40s. Kimber was 12 3/8 Remington was dead nuts on 12. Sold both and bought a Kimber Montana in .223 to rebarrel to .204 with 11 twist PacNor for next winter.

I ended up building a full custom heavy varmint using a Krieger twisted 1:10. It was a tack driver. PacNor makes great barrels, my SML is insane 👍.

Ruger #1 International 7X57. Absolutely gorgeous. Had AAA fancy wood. It also had a chamber that was probably cut with a cut off screwdriver on a drill. Horrible shooter and very low velocities.
Ruger 77MK2 also in 7X57. Brand new from the box it was like patterning a turkey gun. After firing a factory load in it you couldn't force the brass into a full length sizer die. Another horrendous chamber.
Happily all the rest of my #1s are tack drivers. Even the .416 Rigby will shoot MOA or better. I finally found a 7X57 77MK1 that shoots lights out. Perfect chamber.
