What seems to be the going rate for a 6" S&W Model 17 these days?
Are there certain manufacture time frames or features I should be looking for that are more desirable than others?
Any other advice is welcome.
Thank you.

Look here: singleactions.proboards.com/thread/14591/all-bradshaw-photo-volumes-spot and scroll down until you get to the 3 volumes about K22s. I found that helpful. I paid right about $1K for the one I ended up buying. It is mint in the box, tools and papers but those things are worth it to me. I was sure to get one with the internal trigger stop. I like that a lot. You can tell by looking behind the trigger for another little metal piece, ie trigger stop.

Just hauled a 17-6 home. Came with a B Square scope mount and no rear sight. Expected to pay close to 1K for it but the boss asked if I wanted it and gave it to me. Should have a rear sight for it tomorrow. Accuracy report soon..

I recently purchased a nice 17-3 6” for $600.00, then I had TT & TH installed.

As said, depends what you want. If one looks and waits one can get a nice shooter grade gun for in the $500s... If you want something really nice, I just sold a unfired in the box 1952 for $1250.00...so there is everything in between.
My favorite S&Ws are made from the late 1950s to late 1960s. The polishing and bluing during that time fame is a cut above. A 1960s vintage 17-2 or -3 is what I would want to buy. Have a 1964 vintage Model 18 and the blue is just outstanding...
I'd expect to pay $650-850 for the right gun....that will last your kids the rest of their lives also...

I saw a listing for an 18 & thought it was a typo at first. Thanks. EDIT: Found an article that describes M18 as 4" with ramped front sight.

I had a blued 8 3/8" M17 that was my best accuracy shooter. That gun went on almost every trip out to shoot. It was a fun gun.
I wish I knew what happened to it. I checked in with 6 cases and checked out with 5. Somewhere between my Roadtrek and the room, and back to the Roadtrek, it disappeared. I asked all the bellmen and offered a nice reward, but no one came forward. The case also had my 8 3/8" SW 25-5 in 45 Colt. Man, do I feel like a dumb azz for losing those shooters.
The only way to stop stealing is to not collect treasures.
But after reading this thread, I'm now on a quest for a M17 myself.

In the beginning, as in early 1950s, there was the K22 Target Masterpiece that later became the Model 17 and the Combat Masterpiece which became the Model 18. The Target had a 6" tapered barrel and the Combat a 4".
In the late 1950s the Target Masterpiece was reconfigured to a full diameter barrel like the .38 Special (Model 14) and .32 Long (Model 16). The 4" Combat Masterpiece remained the same and had the same barrel profile as the Model 15 which is .38 Special.
Besides the 60's vintage 18 I also have a 1952 (birth year) K22 Target Masterpiece.

I have a 1948 K22 that cost me about $600 because the LGS had it priced as a model 17. It’s a fine shooter but like stated above the bluing is more matte than the later guns

Barrel is heavy on a M17 and thick rib.M18 has tapered barrel and thin rib. Huge difference in balance of revolver.

Thanks everyone. An impromptu visit to my LGS prompted this post. They had an M17 that had recently been brought in. I looked it over & liked how it felt. It had a few handling marks along with some blueing wear, but the screws looked like they had never been messed with. Wasn't sure of current values, so I went home to research. Upon my return a couple days later I was informed that someone had purchased it a couple hours earlier that morning. Fast forward to yesterday. Due to CV19 restrictions & a few other issues, we celebrated Christmas with family last night. Anyone care to guess what the Li'l Woman presented me with? I guess she does listen to me... Sometimes.
