Spent some time visiting several decent size gun shops in the last couple weeks. I've been kind of shocked at their lack of inventory. I'd heard the stories; but... Today, i visited one that usually has a LOT of guns and it really hit home. Only two salespeople in store. Most display cabinets almost empty. Ammo shelves almost bare... i actually asked if they were closing. Nope. Just can't get the guns and ammo in as fast as it is sold. Said they have never, ever seen it like this. People are scared.
As a side note, i saw a lot of women in the gun stores too - with spouses and alone.

My local shop has plenty of guns, not so much ammo... but their prices have gone WAY up! I was shocked! A boxed OMBH 357 for $810??? Not a flattop, either. Looked nice, but no thanks... wasn't even a shorty.

It's all or nothing around here it seems. A lady at work walked into a melee at a local shop. Line out the door. Panic buying. Some dude paying for two pistols at the counter with a wad of bills and stuffing said handguns into his trouser pockets (um, sir... you can't do that). Shelves stripped of ammo. The whole deal.
Couple weeks later I stopped by a lil' country shop on the way home from work and outside of no primers to speak of, it was business as usual. Long guns, handguns, shotguns, take your pick. Heck, they even have Nosler pistol bullets at 25 percent off. I've stopped by twice since then and to be honest I'm about knee deep in Noslers at this point.
I'm still kinda scratching my head...

Most of the heavy discounts from pre covid are gone for sure. Saw a used .204 for sale (only rifle left in that big display case) for over retail of new one. A couple were out of most common calibers for handgun ammo; but one had a glut of 10mm on the shelves. One said they couldn't find any slugs to order before shotgun deer season. Another had literally hundreds of boxes of slugs. None had any .327.

Had 2 cases of 9mm ammo that I didn't need. Sold it to local gunshop. It was gone the next day.

The local indoor range that I frequent was out of 22lr, 380 auto, 9mm, and 38spl for about 2 months. This is a big busy range. Last week, they were all stocked up. Makes me think that maybe we turned a corner, but time will tell.

Scored some Hornady 158 grain XTP-HP bullets for reloading... Full box of 100 for $12 out the door. Sweet!

In some shops,, it depends upon several things. A bigger shop, that has allocation from distributors,, will get product quicker than a small mom-n-pop store. But it also goes to location, location location. A store in places where people are "afraid" will most likely be selling stuff quicker & higher than a rural out of the way place. And prices reflect that similar attitudes. Where demand is high, supply low,, prices often go up.
Basically the manufacturers can not keep up with the demand right now. Buy what you need, when you can,,, or do without later.
I have competition shooters who are starting to NOT go to matches because of shortages of components.
I know of a few shops where they have no reloading supplies,, yet I also know of a small dealer who has some primers, powder & bullets. Not everything some may want,, but enough to where he is able to keep folks shooting. His only rule; "limits to prevent hoarders, and gougers." He wants shooters to buy his stuff, & not the flea marketers who buy all they can & then go re-sell it at huge markups.
And I hear a lot of grumbling about how SOME gun shops are charging excessively,, to where they may lose regular customers in the future.

I also notice the usual/typical self-defense stuff goes first.
There's birdshot at the local stores, but buckshot and slugs are long gone.
Thin on semi-autos here locally, but several revolvers, bolt action rifles, etc.
Some powder, few primers... but then I got lucky and visited a local shop right after they bought some previously owned, but still new in box, bullets for reloading 38 Spl/357 magnum.
