Thanks Doug. Yeah, he sent the pic, then waited an hour for the story ! His son pooped out and fell asleep about 9am.. Dad arrowed a doe a bit later in the morning. They took it home and butchered it, too warm to let hang. They did go back out in the evening, but nada. Sadly, later , he texted me that the boy in Penn family called him and they are not coming this week and now want to wait for muzzle loading season ! I did not think it my place to ask why, bet he didn't either. It was made plain the place was theirs to use and any gear could be provided. So..sigh.. That's not what my friend signed up for, so to speak. Use of the property, walk way and gazebo/deer stand still offered. That buck, not so much. Am still hopeful, but nice weather window is shutting. I do not know at what rate the boys health is fading.

Could be something as simple as the boy wanting to shoot the muzzle loader over the crossbow.
Me, I'd take the first archery season and then go shoot muzzle loaders with some guys for fun.

I know we all are hoping for the best. A young person with a bleak future is hard to balance. Some of us in life have a harder row to hoe than others. If you believe in karma, believe that this young boy has nothing but great karma coming. He's paid his dues. In this life or the next.

I think we all just want to see him with a big, fat smile on his face.

My friend and his son hunted their newly bought Penn acreage yesterday. No word yet from there. He has 67 acres just below the ridge that is called, Top of The World, Driftwood Penn.. A famous scenic overlook park area. Can be googled and viewed online. Leaves are gaining color, peak soon. The buck hasn't been seen on the trail cam since day 2 of Ohio archery. It ranges across several properties, others have permission on those places. Hope for Penn boy to get that but are slim now.

My young friend filled a doe tag here in Ohio, and got word last eve that his son got a young buck in Penn.. So freezer is filling up for his young family. They've a girl too. I am heading for the hills in a couple hours but not to hunt this time. Our oldest friends and my wife and I were all in each others weddings, a month apart, also 3 of our B-days all close. So, annually we celebrate. So a leaf peeping trip to the hills. Color at peak ! Weather doable. A visit to the "Top of the World" and the Kinzua Bridge State Park. Rural outside venues.

Am sad to report that due to mis-communication, efforts were wasted. My friend offered his property and he and his boy hunted elsewhere to clear the decks so to speak. Local police chief and he know how that area, habitat works. The number of urban tags, the nearby park land sanctuary, etc.. My friend stressed that they needed to be there opening morning, over and over. The river bottom habitat there is L shaped, the 1st big bend up from the mouth of the Chagrin River into Lake Erie. At the crook of the L, the park. Other people hunt adjacent properties on both sides of the park, I know a couple of them. They all like to tag a deer or 2 and then move to hunting the hills. Well, the chief's friend in Penn LE shared the game cam pics, told of all the deer, but neglected to pass on to the family that it is a narrow window of opportunity. The family and the boy and his little brother showed up with high hopes just a few days ago, and sadly saw NOTHING. They left, giving my friend dirty looks. Bleep. For us, hunting is hunting, but bleep, reeeally wanted for this to be a slam dunk. Thank you for your kind thoughts, prayers, well wishes, etc.. Sometimes life just SUCKS.

A gift is a gift. Sometimes, it doesn't work out.
But it does not diminish the act of giving.
Your heart's in the right spot.
