I finally got a Ruger No. 1, what do I need to know?

I love #1 rifles, as others said the 2 big things is making very sure you set on your bench so the rifle is shot exactly the same each time, something you should do for every gun of course. But play with where the front bag is in relation to the action and forearm and try a couple different spots. My 22/250 doesn't seem to be too sensitive but I have shot custom 270 WSM that was very specific in requiring the bag be just in front of the action at the very rear of the forearm, it was the difference of 5-6" groups at 200 or 1" groups at 200 yards!

With a 1B you wont have to worry about it but for the models with a barrel stud for the sling you cant really tie up in a sling military style when shooting or the pressure of the sling moves the point of impact, go figure.

Other than that enjoy, in a 257 it should be a wonderfully accurate and easy to shoot rifle...

Some may dispute this and that will be fine. We all have our theories and process things in our minds in different ways.

To me the definition of Accuracy is simply everything being the same from shot to shot. If that's true, pressure on the barrel would not change accuracy. However, changing pressure on the barrel would most certainly change the accuracy potential.

The solution is to simply keep contacting area consistent.

I used my stoney point gauge to get the distance to the lands in my rifle with Nosler Accu-Bond 110 gr. and Hornady 117 gr. BTSP Interlock. To get the average I measured ten of each bullet.

The 110 gr. Accubond touched the lands at 2.906" cartridge overall length, and the Hornady 117 gr. BTSP Interlock was touching at 2.862" cartridge overall length. I've read that the number 1's have long throats, and evidently they do,

I found out the number 1 was made in 1999, and has a 1/10" twist. The Leupold scope was made prior to 1974, but Leupold couldn't tell me exactly when.

I'm going to try the Hornady 117 gr. Interlocks in the rifle first. Hope it likes'em.

My K-1A in .257 likes that weight very well, though I use the Sierra Pro Hunter flat base with a large does of H4831, shoots great. Neat little rifle. I also have a ltd run 1A in .275 Rigby that they ran a few years ago. It sports a 24" barrel with a single fixed blade rear and white dot front sights. It too shoots very well.
I think they may have just let another run of these loose so if anyone is looking for one of those, I have seen some on Gunjoker.

I had a #1 in 257 Roberts and never could nail that rifle down in the accuracy department. MANY range sessions and different things tried. A Game Warden buddy of mine wanted it and I let it go. Like anything in life, some do it right out of the box, some need fixing. Never know till you try.

and i despise the 130gr nosler bt with 47.0gr of imr 4320

None of mine have had the fore end issue. All are super accurate.

As far as handloading, try and seat your bullets just shy of the lands. .020-.030 is what I try for. If, you have a big jump to the lands you will need to make sure your bullet runout is minimal. I do use a sinclair concentricity gauge for my hand loads. if there off a lot I have a block of hardwood with different "caliber" holes to get it with as little runout as I can, -.003 is doable this way.
I have worked with the 257R since 1984 in a USRAC Featherweight and a Ruger No.1B and have shot plenty of rounds down range to have decided on bullet/powder combo's that work in my rifle's.
Nosler 120 Partitions / Nosler 110 Accubond and RL-19 is my standard powder for these two bullets. Hybrid 100V is a solid 2nd choice.
Barnes 80gr TTSX boattails / Hornady 75gr V-max and WW760 works very well here.
Hope this helps a little, shoot your gun and dont be worried about the forend hanger. If there is problems, you already have read above, that there are many to help you on that. But, make sure there's a problem first.

Appreciate it! It came with a box of 115 gr Nosler Partitions, and 110 gr Accubonds. I have some 117 gr Interlocks BTSP on hand from my Dads m77 in .257 Roberts. I plan on trying the 117 gr Interlocks first with either H4350, IMR4831, or Superformance.
