I am thinking of getting a freedom arms 83 41 mag. I have a custom 41 Ruger Blackhawk, and reload for it, with a Miha bullet and one from lbt.
My question is; what overall loaded length will fit in a freedom arms 41 mag cylinder, model 83.
Thanks in advance, Joe

Hogdon's longest listed OAL for the .454 is 1.770". I measured my FA83 .454 Cyl and subtracted rim (cyl is recessed for rims) and got 1.780"(which would place bullet right at face of cyl). FAs are known for tight throats and abrupt leedes (SP? - transition from chamber to throat), so bullet diameter/profile will probably be more of a constraint than OAL.
Hogdon's longest listed OAL for the .41 Mag (265gr LFNGC) is 1.710", if that helps.
Note that The FA97 max OAL is right at 1.600" + a bit.

Be prepared. That FA will shoot lights out. You'll be amazed.

That’s what I hear.
475 Linebaugh was awesome, but at 63, I don’t need the recoil of even the mild loads.
So I’m gonna sell it and all the trappings. Then find the fa 41

Have run a whole bunch of different cast and jacketed bullets through my original 6" with zero issues as to LOA. The only sticking point in this 83 so far has been when trying to use real Keith bullets as the lead into the throats is very short. I can size them .409 and they run just fine.
Have a second one now and have zero issues with the same Keith rounds that will stick in the 6" gun...
And you are right about recoil. I've tried the .44 Magnum, .454 and .475 and just don't need that much power or the recoil that goes with it. With the nice heavy FA 83 I can run 250-300 grain bullets all day long and never feel a thing...not so with the others...

Well stated Bob, the 41 magnum is such a wonderful caliber to shoot. Even with heavy bullets, 250-265 grs its easy on the shooter because that little bit of extra weight in the barrel & cylinder makes it just a bit easier on us older guys & makes it so much more pleasant to shoot long strings if we choose to. Accuracy is always top notch with correct loads with either good cast bullets or any of the many different jacketed bullets available. Even the light weight 170 gr Sierra can be driven at some amazing velocities & still hold up well on big game if you choose to go the light weight route. There's nothing wrong with the 44, 45, 480 or the 500's if you're a young rooster & can manage the heavier recoil, but if the fun is kind of gone from having to adjust your eye glasses after every shot the 41 magnum is a hunters dream caliber & guess what, you'll still never recover a bullet.

I love the 83 475, it shoots like a rifle with the Miha 385 hollowpoint powder coated, over 13 gr of HS-6. I have killed several deer with it, quite firmly!
But I have decided the mastodons have been shot out here in SE Texas, so I don’t need quite that much horsepower. Any of my 45 Colts is more than enough.
Got a hankering for a 41 model 83, so will go that route. I had a 97 45 colt, lovely gun, danger accurate, but beat me up something awful. Great size gun for a lesser caliber for my hands, but the colt was no fun.
If y’all know of anyone in the market for the 475, with tons of extra stuff, (dies, molds, sizers, mount, brass, bullets), let them know, I will make a heck of a deal.

My FA 83 has a 7.5” barrel, and sling swivel studs. Also has a pachmayer presentation grip, black micarta grips too.

Great gun...one of my all time favorites... Have had the 6" since 2002. Just picked up the round butt that had been a 6" in January and sent it in for shortening... Bob
