I almost felt for you a little until I saw the “Montana Hilton”! Haha. I was prepared for worse. I had no idea we would have heat!

The scenery and meal would more than make up for the long horseback ride in.

Kevin. Fantastic story of a hunt of a lifetime. Made special much more by the people you shared it with than the animals taken. Most of us have married up, but you have married way up. Cherish that gal and take every opportunity to show how much you appreciate her.

Great pictures!
I love wall tent camping. I have a week of wall tent, horseback, snowshoe hare hunting coming up early November. Your pictures have gotten me overly excited for the hunt.

Just a bit jealous. Would have been my dream hunt, years ago. All the boxes ticked. Wonderful pics ! Thank you for sharing. Back in the mid '80's 2 friends and I backpacked and climbed for a month out west. A week of it in the Bob, east side of divide. Always wanted to go back and get packed in and hunt or fish for a week. I'd not survive the horseback ride in, now. Not complaining, just life. Going to Erie today to buy a pop up type dome tent to use as a "spike camp" and will atv up a Penn mtn the night before to hunt deer or bear.

The different perspective from "the better half" Is great! Each hunter sees things in a different light,, as is normal. But the fact remains,, it was one heck of a great hunt & memories were created that both will cherish always. Kudos again!

Congratulations to both of you! There is no other hunt like a back country elk hunt on horses, I've done it all my life & it is such a unique experience you wish you could share it with everyone. You must remember that these kinds of hunts start with good equipment & good equipment starts with good horses & mules. With out top notch animals your hunt can end before it even begins. Every year we would run into people with packstrings that were scattered all over the mountain side, sometimes with injured riders or animals with broken legs, etc. The back country is no place for 2 year old colts. Many times the hunters were not experienced riders so you had to have good stock so no one got hurt, it's very important when the trail in 2-3 feet wide & there's nothing but a river below you maybe 150 feet down. All this costs money so back country elk hunts aren't cheap, you get what you pay for. Looks like you guys had a fantastic hunt with a good outfitter, good for you!!

My wife and I talked a lot of all the preparation required to pull off appropriately. This outfitter has 330 horses right now. We rode a select group. They also do trail rides throughout the year so they get a lot of training and experience. Packing in all the supplies took at least 16 mules. As you said all the preparation by the guide is significant and although expensive part of me is shocked that they can do it for what they do. All the horses, mules, ranch hands, guides, cooks, food, tents, supplies, etc., etc. And there's no way to quantify the knowledge, work ethic and persistence of the guide. I actually expecting the guide to tell my wife she was done. But he pressed on as long as my wife was ready, willing and able. I have a lot of respect for him for that alone. It was a once in a lifetime hunt I plan to do again sometime soon.
