LAST WEEK I PLINKED WITH THE FEDERAL AE 100gr AMMO AND A RELOAD OF 7grs OF LONSHOT UNDER A 100gr XTP, AND THE LATTER SEEMED TO BE MORE ACCURATE SO I BROUGHT IT TO MY RANCH EARLIER THIS WEEK. YESTERDAY (9/25/20) I CHRONO'ed THE LONGSHOT LOAD. BASED UPON BRIAN PEARCE's WRITINGS I WAS EXPECTING MID 1,300's OUT OF THE 5.5 INCH MODEL 97. TEMP WAS LOW 80's, ELEVATION 2,263 FEET, SHOT 7 AND HERE ARE THE READINGS: 1551, 1538, 1521, 1523, 1466, 1534 & 1543. EXCEPT FOR THE ONE OUTLIER OF 1466, THE READINGS WERE REMARKABLY CONSISTENT. IF YOU ELIMINATE THE HIGH AND THE LOW YOU HAVE 5 SHOTS WITH A HIGH OF 1543 AND A LOW OF 1521 AND AN AVERAGE OF 153X. I WAS BOTH SURPRISED AND VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE MV READINGS AND THE CONSISTENCY OF THE LOADS. WILL TRY TO DO SOME SERIOUS GROUP TESTING WHEN I GET HOME. IF THIS LOAD IS ACCURATE, WHICH IT SEEMS TO BE, IT WILL BE A HELLUVA EVERY DAY LOAD.

You should be able to get close to that kind of velocity with your .32-20 and 140gn bullets.

Question for those of you who have a .32-20 and .327 on the same frame...how much more will the .32-20 run than the .327?

JUST HAD A RUDE SURPRISE, WAS GOING TO LOAD UP ON 100gr XTP's FOR THE 327 BUT CANNOT FIND ANY. I ONLY HAVE ABOUT 250 IN INVENTORY. I ALSO HAVE ABOUT 200-300 OF SOME 1990's REMINGTON 100gr JSP 32-20 BULLETS THAT I USED TO PUSH PRETTY HARD IN MY 32-20 BUCKEYE. NO MORE PLINKING WITH THE MODEL 97 327 AND THE XTP's FOR A WHILE. WILL FINISH SOME LOAD DEVELOPMENT AND THEN "COOL IT".

Not only a speedster in the 32 caliber, but also deadly accurate! I know this is not a FA or Blackhawk but still proved to be strong enough for some serious muscle loads. This thing screams for heavy fer calibur slugs, and it really shines the heavier you feed it, at least my little GP-100 was at home with the bigger bullets in the 327 Fed. Not sure as I never had one, but I think it will equal or come close to any 32-20 performance, and I'm sure equal it's accuracy! The GP-100 proved to me not only capable of some very surprising velocity for a 6" barrel, but from a seven shooter once I put some serious lead in it, the shot to shot velocity was unreal for consistency. I had some seriously compressed charges using the 140 grain sledgehammer I cast from the Mihec mold as a 133 grain Penta HP, and it was a serious thumper at close to 1550 fps Aav., with superb accuracy for factory production revolver with no custom work, I'm sure the 97 would only reinforce this! That little Ruger Double Action had on hole that showed it to refuse to play with the other 6 holes. But that 327 proved to shoot about any good cast bullet with extremely good accuracy, but heavies were preference in this cartridge! The Noe 126 grain didn't disappoint either, only 25 yards, but the one hole shoed it didn't discriminate with any bullet, it always refused to play. I'm sure these two loads would be my starting point in a FA 97, and I'm pretty sure results would be prove to be great! enjoy that fine shooter! MMP is surplus H-110 and I used Federal small rifle 205M primers in mine to start the fire, and always a heavy crimp with a Redding Profile Crimp die to hel[p get that slower MMP powder burning right, these are plenty hot and to much for any thinner cylinder or smaller framed gun but in your 97 or a Blackhawk as others have said,, they will add new meaning to the 327 Federal with the right handloads and respect from the loader!!! Both these were long seated to get the powder capacity I needed in this case, but the little GP had the Cylinder length to accommodate it, I think its about the same as the Blackhawk in length, not sure on a 97? 140 Mihec Sledgehammer The 126 NOE seated long as well, need that powder space for this slower powder!

I know the measurements of a 97 327 cylinder is out there, but I haven't measured mine. Regardless, a Sledgehammer fits with some room to spare and it has a long nose.
I've been kinda lazy with my 327 97 as I've never chronographed any loads yet. The only 2 bullets used to date are PC'd cast from my molds. A few loads weren't as good as others, but all were good. An accurate revolver sure allows you to get real picky.

You buy a Freedom Arms gun and run a steel bore brush down the barrel?

WENT TO MY RANGE ON THE RIO GRANDE THIS MORNING. WAS SHOOTING THE 5.5 INCH MODEL 97 327 USING THE 7grs OF LONGSHOT LOAD. SOME WERE CRIMPED WITH REDDING PROFILE CRIMP DIES (THE LOAD I CHRONO'ed LAST WEEK) AND SOME CRIMPED WITH A NEWLY ACQUIRED LEE CARBIDE FACTORY CRIMP DIE. EVEN RAN A FEW OF THE PROFILE CRIMP LOADS THRU THE LEE F/C DIE. NONE OF THE ROUNDS WERE "RESIZED" IN THE LEE F/C DIE. I PUT A PRETTY HEAVY CRIMP ON THE RELOADS WITH THE LEE F/C DIE. THE LEE CRIMPED ROUNDS FELT STOUTER THAN THE REDDING CRIMPED ROUNDS. I HAD MORE ISSUES (DIFFICULLT INSERTION/DIFFICULT EXTRACTION) WITH THE LEE CRIMPED ROUNDS. ACCURACY WISE, IF THERE WAS AN EDGE IT WENT TO THE REDDING CRIMPED DIES. FOR NOW, AND WITH BULLET AND PRIMER SHORTAGES TO DEAL WITH, I WILL JUST STICK WITH THE REDDING P/C DIE
IT MAY BE MY AGING EYES (I AM 76) AND/OR THE HIGH SKY/BRIGHT SUN, BUT I AM NOT GETTING SUB 1 INCH GROUPS AT 25 YARDS, MY BETTER GROUPS BEING 1.5 INCHERS. BEEN THINKING OF PUTTING A FAST FIRE III ON THE REVOLVER TO GET A BETTER IDEA OF HER ACCURACY POTENTIAL BUT AGAIN, BULLET AND PRIMER SHORTAGES ARE DISCOURAGING ME FROM DOING THAT.
ENUFF PAPER PUNCHING, IN THE MORNING I HOPE TO GET BACK TO THE RANGE AND SHOOT OFF HAND AT 4 INCH SWINGERS AT 25 YARDS AND A 6.5 INCH SWINGER AT 50 YARDS.

Sometimes a simple front sight change works for me. Some just work better with my eyes.
I'm very heavy into the 327 Federal. Too many revolvers to list. But, all are individuals. Different powders, bullets, crimps, etc make them work.
My FA-97 is the 7.5" version, so I scoped it. It also has the trigger over travel screw that helps accuracy.
Betting you get there. Just keep working loads and keep us informed.

WENT DOWN BY THE RIO GRANDE THIS MORNING (10/4/20), FINALLY GOT THE MODEL 97 327 SIGHTED IN WITH THE 100gr XTP/7grs OF LONGSHOT LOAD. WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS THE PREMIER REAR SIGHT ADJUSTING IS, A "MAS O MESOS" DRIFT ADJUSTABLE, NO CALIBRATIONS, SYSTEM, UGH. AS GOOD A REVOLVER AS THIS IS, I DO NOT SHOOT IT AS WELL AS MY LARGE CALIBER RUGER BISLEYS, NEED TO DO MORE SHOOTING WITH IT, AND THINKING OF GOING TO CAST BULLETS AT HEAVIER WEIGHTS BUT, NOT BEING A LEAD MIDAS MEISTER, I DO NOT LIKE TO PUSH LEAD BULLETS PAST 1,300fps. I WOULD NOT MIND FASTER THAN 1,300fps IF IT WAS JUST FOR SMALLER CRTITTERS/VARMINTS BUT ON DEER SIZE ANIMALS? ?
