Finally scored one today. It has been the most difficult rifle I've ever tried to get. I'd given up and my LGS Manager called.
One single example popped up and he hit the buy button. He called and said he could cancel if I'd changed my mind. I definitely had not changed my mind. The rifle arrived at my LGS today.
I wanted a traditional rifle and decided the 20" Saddle Ring Carbine was the way to go. The pictures he sent were beautiful and I'll see it tomorrow.
No matter what hot shot cartridges pop up, I still have a deep seated love for the old hyphenated cartridges. Hope I'm not the only one...

Yes I've been wanting one of these for years. A friend had a Navy Arms 1892 in 44-40 years ago. We easily pushed the 240 grn to 1800 fps from his with great accuracy. So many folks consider these old guns feeble and that's a mistake. The 25-20, 32-20, 38-40 and 44-40 can be given teeth just as the 45 Colt is these days. This gun will be a perfect companion to my Clements 44-40 Blackhawk.

I realize interest in these old rounds is very limited. But, posting for the few that wonder.
Gave the New 1892 a good going over with some dummy rounds. The gun accepts a longer COAL than some of the old guns, which is good for me.
The bore groove measured .4285" as close as I could measure. Chamber accepted ammo loaded with .429" and .430" bullets just fine. Ammo with .431" bullets was a no go. Sounds like a well thought out group of specs.
Fit and finish are first rate. As we mentioned yesterday, same as the beautiful Brownings we've seen through the years.
Wood is straight grain Walnut, but wood to metal fit is perfect.
Trigger pull is better than expected and on par with most factory guns.
I much prefer the rebounding hammer and tang safety over the bolt mounted twist safety that's an eyesore. The tang safety is very well low profile and unobstructive.
Think this will be a shooter, more later...

Been a fan of the 92 and the .44-40 for years, had several. Had 2 or 3 Rossi's, good little rifles. Right now have a Chiappa SRC with case colored receiver and buttplate. Shoots great. Don't see too many around but there is one on GB right now, just like mine. Standard hammer safety on these, no goofy levers or tangs. www.gunbroker.com/item/877129310

Not wild about the price of that gun. But, a stainless Chiappa at my LGS that's pretty nice.
I just wanted the Winchester and got it considerably cheaper than the one on GunBroker.
But, have seen several of the imports that were first rate just as the Ubertis are. Heck, this Winchester was built in Japan.

I didn't pay that much for mine, that one is high. IIRC I got mine for about $800. Really nice little rifle. I have 3 Miroku 1895 rifles, they aint no flies on them.

IN THE LATE 50's I SHOT MY FIRST BUCK WITH MY DAD's VERY EARLY POST-WAR, OPEN SIGHT, WINCHESTER 30-30, MY ONLY DEER WITH AN OPEN SIGHT RIFLE EVER. NOT SURE WHY I BOTHER TO OWN ANY CENTER FIRE RIFLES BUT AT MY AGE I NEED OPTICS ON RIFLES.

Have it converted to a takedown and get a 2nd front end in .38-40 and you will have the perfect rifle. Add a Lyman receiver sight with 2 slides and you will have perfection

Add a Lyman receiver sight with 2 slides and you will have perfection I don't mess with guns like this one. I see so many inferior products these days that are only fit for project guns. Honestly, some aren't even fit for that. On the rare occasion a gun comes in with perfect fit, finish and tolerances, I leave it alone. It's a damned shame that most of the finest quality guns I see these days come from other countries.
