Over the years I've seen lots of threads and discussions regarding oversize throats and the S&W Model 25. Is it mainly a .45ACP issue or do the .45 Colt's have the same problem? I know there are ways around the problem (new cylinder, custom loads) but was it fixed by the time the -13 and Mountain Gun came along? I've got a wee bit of an itch for a .45 Colt Model 25 so I figured I'd better try and get this straight in my head with what dash numbers or date codes might have issues before I go down this rabbit hole. Thanks!

I just picked up a 25-13 Mountain Gun last week. Throats are .452” (checked with pin gages). Bore checked at .444” but have not slugged the barrel to get groove diameter yet.

I know very little about S&W Revolvers, but own a few. One of those is the M25 Classic. Throats are all six a snug .452".
Gun is well made, tight and accurate.
Sorry I can't be more help...

It’s pretty well agreed that any non-pinned barrel will have proper throats. There are -5’s that are pinned and some that are not, so the “change” occurred sometime in that series. That’s been my experience too. I’ve had two pinned barrel guns with huge throats and one non-pinned currently that’s perfect. Also a -7 that’s good to go as well. Each of the “Classic” guns I’ve seen are also correct.

As previously stated...
The simple rule of thumb is that 25-5 with UNPINNED barrels forward are good.

Pocket pool shooters shot the 45 ACP S&Ws for a long time with no wild complaints I ever heard. I've personally owned a few pinned guns that shot fine. In the early 80s I bought a 25-5 (45 Colt) that was a good example of what bad throats could do. That danged gun would barely stay in the black(6 inch) at 25 yards. I traded it off and never looked back. My ACP 625s shoot good.

Yep, my 25-5 had large throats and it was a major pain to try to build handloads that would not swage down during seating or crimping. Accuracy of course was totally inconsistent even with the 8 3/8" barrel. Trying different specialty dies got expensive.
I would not go that route again.

There is a cure for these guns, and it's not painful.............. but you have to cast them yourself. I'm not sure a commercial caster would bother to try them. That solution is a hollow base bullet. They work in hugely oversize throats or barrels including those that the rifling is almost washed out. I have a nice Keith SWC that I could run as a group buy if enough of you are interested..... 250 gr solid or ~230 hollow base dependent on which HB pin you pick.

Of course now I don’t remember where I read it, but I did see a suggestion to try bullets for the .455 Webley in a 25 with oversized throats. Does that seem reasonable?

Basically, there are a lot of guns out there that are 45 Colt or converted to 45 Colt that have some really non standard dimensions (quite a few are converted .455's). Cylinder throats from 0.450" to 0.458" and barrel groove diameters in the same range and a lot of them don't match well. The .455 Webley originally used a hollow base bullet which cured the small cylinder throat with a larger barrel groove diameter, BUT a lot of folks use a solid of 0.454" to 0.458" bullet to make them shoot well. There is no standard used, just what a fellow wants to do or try.

ENTERED S&W 45 COLT 25-5 ON GUNBROKER, ALL THE REVOLVERS HAD PINNED BARRELS, THE UN-PINNED 25-5's MAY BE HARD TO COME BY.

I have a colt saa in .45 colt. Also own this smith 25-5 .45 colt. i.postimg.cc/zG9wwgJX/S-W-25-5.jpgI took the pair out together and the cases were stuck and bulged in the colt saa and had to be pounded out. They dropped right out of the smith without having to push or pound with the same ammo. Colt invented the .45 colt, why cant they get it right? I sent it back and they did give me a new cylinder with the removable bushing at no charge PLUS they numbered it to the gun! That was quite a few years ago and I still haven't really worked out much with those guns except to test fire them. I dont have a mike and wouldn't know how to use it if I did. But just putting the same shell in both cylinders the "play" looks identical. Still when I fired the colt the case`s didn't stick like before. i.postimg.cc/fybCP7zk/Colt-SAA-SA-47021-45-colt.jpg

I owned a beautiful 25-2 back in the 1980's the throats were way over sized. I was trying to shoot. 451 Hensley and Gibbs bullets and it would not shoot worth a darn. I went with 200 grain. 454 bullets, don't remember what mould and it shoot like a dream.
