Hello All, I received a beautiful new barrel in the mail yesterday! 10 inch 45 Colt Heavy Barrel that I had them drill and tap for there factory scope mount. I'm looking for suggestions on a decent 2x scope or red dot. So far my research has me looking at either a Leupold or Ultradot. Thanks for looking and any advice. Boats

You ordered this one from them new? Yes. I can't believe they marked the shroud with Long Colt.

VERY NICE. SOMETIME, LONG AGO, IN THE 20th CENTURY, I HAD A COUPLE OF DW's, INCLUDING A 45 COLT. I JUST NEVER LIKED THE "VARIABLE" OF A REMOVABLE BARREL SHROUD, SO THEY WENT DOWN THE ROAD. MOST ACCURATE REVOLVER I EVER SAW IN IHMSA WAS A BUDDIE'S STAINLESS 41 MAG DW.
UNLESS THE SHOOTING DISTANCE WILL BE 50 YARDS OR UNDER I DO NOT CARE FOR 2X SCOPES. IF YOU WILL BE SHOOTING OFF HAND I DO NOT CARE FOR 4X SCOPES. MAYBE YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR A 2-6, OR 2-7, OR 2-8 VARIABLE.
I DO NOT HAVE ENUFF EXPERIENCE WITH RED DOTS AT 50 - 100 YARDS TO COMMENT ON THEIR VIABILITY FOR SUCH USE.

I don't mind low power scopes on big game hunting revolvers. I actually prefer them and I almost primarily hunt the west. I don't need a ton of magnification to shoot a deer or elk at 300 yards. Frankly, it is 50/50 if I'm even hunting with a scope at this point. For me, it has to be a stand hunt in timber to use a red dot on a handgun.

With a revolver I do not feel hindered using a red dot out to 100 yards, provided it’s a 3-4 Moa dot, and I’m after medium game. If smaller game is on the menu or brush becomes an issue between you and your target then some magnification is helpful. If moving game is a possibility then a red dot is hands down easier than some magnification, if you have limited experience with using the newer reflex type red dots, the little ones, then a tube sight red dot will be much more intuitive and easier to get used to, they’re just bigger and bulkier.

I am a big ultradot fan! That said, my hunting is done in the woods, and a long shot is 75yds. I have an m-8 2x leupold that is fine rested at the range, but I find that it takes too long to line up a shot in my hunting woods. With more practice, I could probably get better with it, but the ultradots really work great in my situation. Great barrel by the way, and in one of my favorite calibers!

I just received my 741 barrels and spare shrouds, to complete my 741 DW and once my cc recovers I plan to get a 4" & 6" vent barrel assemblies for my 745 DW and hopefully be done with adding barrels to my DW's.
