Back in 1989 I bought a first year 629 Mountain Gun and kept if for about 20 years. It was a great revolver but for some reason I foolishly sold it and have been kicking myself ever since. Yesterday i ran across a Model 25-13 Mountain Gun in 45 Colt and snagged it. I went home and checked the chamber throats with pin gauges (.451" is fairly loose but .452" wont go). I will slug the barrel this weekend. The bluing is very nice for a late model Smith and the grips look nice but the finger grooves are sharp and don't fit my fingers. I've got a set of Bear Hug grips that Deacon Deason made for my old 629 but so far I haven't been able to find them (I moved 4 years ago and a lot of stuff is still in boxes in the basement). Hopefully I can get to the range this weekend and try her out.

I've had the same gun for years, she used to lead pretty badly even though the throats and barrel measurements all are fine. I had the action tuned and a set of Blu Magnum grip made up then I firelapped her for 36 rounds or so polishing up the bore and the leading issue has pretty much gone away. She is by far my favorite big bore double action now...

Nice pickup! Those grips are Kim Ahrends I believe, have a set on my S&W 24 and they fit my hand perfectly.

I also have one of those. Remember before you purchase grips that your gun is a round butt. Also your gun is blued stainless. It is not a carbon steel gun.

I never heard of that either! Would be really cool to get the look of blue and the durability of stainless!

Just a thought.... Stainless does not react to a magnet as I remember, correct? Maybe the OP could put a magnet to it and see if it reacts?

A magnet will stick to it either way, gun SS is magnetic. I have never heard that either about being blued SS.

Most firearms are made with 400 series stainless which contains carbon. It will attract a magnet as well as corrosion, though its much more resistant to corrosion than non-stainless steel.

Well blackend stainless aka blued is nothing new. I happened to be scrubbing my cylindern face after shooting some old swaged lead bullets and found out when the color on the cylinder started to lighten up.

Was it a S&W? Would love to hear an informed opinion on this question from someone who knows. D Bradshaw perhaps?

If it is a 25 it is blued steel.
