"Kit gun" for me means a small caliber compact gun taken along mostly for fun; maybe plinking, maybe some small game shooting if the opportunity arises. Nothing suits that need better for me than one of my N.M. Single Six Convertibles. Stainless, 4-5/8" barrels, perfectly sighted, LR or Magnum, as desired on the occasion.
If the trip involves big game hunting, or potentially dangerous critters in the area, a centerfire will be carried. That's a different subject.

Wife and I trail ride our UTV (Polaris XP 900) a lot. The gun I carry the most is this old S&W M&P. While I have many more bigger caliber and more expensive handguns, this is my cheapest, simplest and most used. I dont like carrying my safe queens and beating them up on the dusty trails. A couple years ago a deer jumped out in front of us that I hit. I had to put it out of its misery. I usually carry a snake load on top. Have shot a few. i.postimg.cc/V6tPh2ZZ/S-W-M-P-C-338325.jpg

For the small J-frame size "Kit Gun":
Rimfire...S&W 63 .22 Long Rifle 4" that is also fitted with a .22 Magnum cylinder from a 651..
Centerfire...S&W 60-10 .357 Magnum 3" with adjustable sights and is also fitted with a extra cylinder that will take .38 Super and 9mm via moon clips..
Would love to have one of the 631 .32 H&R Magnums or the 632 .327 Federal 3" guns but they are in the $1200-1600 range when they come up for sale.. Sure wish that Ruger would bring out the LCRX3" in .327...

That pretty much is what I hold a Kit Gun to be but, I would add it needs to be fearless to carry in less than controlled situations. That means a utility grade gun nothing fancy , delicate or custom . It is best represented by stainless. Plain Jane grips and a fullcover or flap holster are usually the best idea . Where I wander threat level animals usually slither on the ground or walk on two legs. Most larger animals really avoid people and are long gone. This means smaller caliber guns will fit the bill. Many scruffy miles ,sweat and dirt on these rimfires. Model 51 Model 34-1 But lately that duty has moved to some 4" SP-101 guns in 327 and 357. These are super flexible with ammo running mild to wild and love cast plinkers . They seem suited for the job like no other.

This s&w model 34 22 lr is billed as a kit gun. i.postimg.cc/NFLvBHsP/S-W-model-34-75679.jpg I have only wore it in the boonies a couple times. I think we are trying here to take our favorite packing guns and trying to explain them as "kit guns". Now I have a number of guns that are favorite packing guns that doesn't meet the original meaning of "kit gun". This s&w model 66-3 3" lew horton special one of three hundred is one of my favorite packing guns. i.postimg.cc/VLMGztnq/S-W-3-088.jpg

I have the original “kit gun” by S&W, but what I usually carry in the woods is what I carry every day, an S&W Shield in .40 Short & Weak. If I expect to see any hogs, I usually carry a Glock model 20 or 40, both in 10mm of course. If I’m in my side by side it’s usually an AR pistol in .223. Pretty handy in a tight place.
Of course, if I’m carrying a gun fit for hogs, I usually don’t see any.........:-)

My hands down favorite ever kit gun is my S&W M 34 but it is just so nice I don't have the heart to let it get beat up. So, my most carried kit gun is an old Charter pathfinder. It is almost as accurate, a little lighter, and has a slightly shorter barrel so, easier to pack. It's already beat up so not much worry there.
Before the Charter, I carried a short barrel H&R .22. Don't remember the model and can't check because I loaned it to my sister in law some years ago. She carries it daily and 'aint about to give it up. It's a solid little gun.
Don't get to carry a kit gun much any more though. Nowadays I carry something more serious when out and about, …usualy a .45 Blackhawk.

"Currently it's my 4" 10mm single six " Yah.....gonna need pictures of this one! Here it is, still basically being built. Cylinder had just been heat treated and the front sight had not yet been shaped or regulated for the service load. Here's a discussion thread from the start. singleactions.proboards.com/thread/26778/dime
