Thinking seriously about a Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40mm Riflescope on a new Savage 220 slug gun for deer hunting.
Any experience with, better options, or recommendations?

that should do it. I have one of those 220s with scope [ leupold 1.5x5 ] works great. 3 seasons, 3 nice bucks. longest shot about 175 yds. a friend has taken several deer with his, the longest shot about 240 yds

I have an ultra slugger 20 gauge with laminated thumb hole stock. Been wearing an Leupold 2x7 for several years. Longest shot right at 200 yards. Mine really likes the Hornady sst slugs

Thanks for thoughts so far!
As a bit more detail for why I'mthinking more than a 1 x 4 power scope... I can only think of three scenarios in which it will used at less than 80 yards. My wife or son is using it. I can't use a handgun for some reason (such as wrist issues). I'm shooting at a big, big buck that needs anchored right now so it can't make it across neighbor's property line.

Regarding the www.trijicon.com/products/details/tr20-1gI really like the illuminated dot feature it offers and had also been considering the Vortex VIPER® PST™ GEN II 2-10X32. Ultimately, decided I should try to keep total cost of scope and mount to $500 or less. Thinking about that feature though has me rethinking the Leupold 3x9 firedot.

I don’t have any experience with a fire dot but that would probably be my next consideration. I’m using the TR22-1G. The glass is comparable to Leupold, maybe a little bit better? But, at dusk/dawn I can turn my scope up to 7x without shutting out light and the dot is very bright and very precise. I was previously using a Leupold such as you first mentioned. I would definitely not switch back. The next best illuminated scope would probably cost double. For what it’s worth, neither the Leupold nor the Trijicon glass hold a candle to my Zeiss Victory binoculars. If you need a Zeiss illuminated scope, it’s not for hunting during legal hours LOL.

Did a whole lot of reading and thinking. Wound up ordering the 3x9x40 firedot. Probably not the best or the cheapest; but a good option.
Have a couple very wide racked bucks on trail cam. Still have to do some shooting with .44 and .460 to see if wrist can handle it or if i can hit worth a darn weak handed. If can't, may pack .327 for does and a shotgun for big bucks.

Just an update. Wound up upgrading the gun to the latest version of the Savage 220. Accufit stock, trigger, etc. Stainless & camo. Nice combo with the leupold 3x9x40 30mm firedot scope. Gave it my wife. She really likes it; but hasn't shot it yet. Will shoot this weekend.

on wrist... not sure what i'll do. More focused on trying to get my son & my wife lined up on bucks. Last shot 9mm in sig 365 and it hurt. Shot fairly well with it left handed. Will probably shoot some hanguns this weekend to see what i can tolerate and if i can shoot accurately enough to be confident.

I always used higher powered scopes on my slug guns and never found a down side to it, never wished I had less magnification... IF you can judge distances and apply them. Like the line about your eyes being hungrier than you stomach. don't let your eyes shoot farther than your gun can.

Just for what it is worth. Shot the gun a few times now. Wife & just turned 8 year old son shot it today. The firedot made it easy for my son to transition from his rascal with red dot. Really feared recoil would be too much for each; but they both did very well. Kind of second guessing the Mossberg 500 combo i had gotten for my son. Kind of wishing had gotten the 220 combo for each of us! ;-)

Ordered two more Savage 220s today just like the first for my son and myself.
One of my nephews nailed the wide racked 9 pointer during archery season and saw a much bigger ten pointer (and missed due to a small branch).
