I have a fondness for the fine sporting guns and the cartridges from the period of the development of the metallic cartridge.
I have some bore rifles and I've owned others from that period and I'm always looking for advertising copy from then. It's always interesting to see what the trends were around the shape and design of the projectiles. Usually I see the "cat's paw" or somewhat acorn-shaped bullet.
This image is interesting. A big fat WFN bullet. The cartridge is a *big game cartridge*. That's pretty much the direct translation of Hochwildpatrone. This is the 14.5x49R & 14.5x52R Dombrowski-Heissig Hochwildpatrone, or essentially a sporting 577 2" cartridge.
Looks like a ripper of a revolver cartridge! But no, it's home would be in a light sporting rifle. Powder charge somewhere in the range of 70-100 grains black powder, or 2-1/2 to 3 drams.
Except for the hollow base, that's our familiar WFN bullet, but from 1887

I find nothing new, just a different spin on things. We are convinced we need the "new and improved" whatever to keep sales up.
I'm also extremely fond of the old cartridges and find they work as well as they ever did.
Thanks for posting this John...

I think I need a 577 revolver for this obsolete Victorian era cartridge.
Might need to have a chat with the regional ATF field agent.
That would be too damn cool.

Could you do that if a "Black Powder" only handgun?

The snafu is around bore size.
I've looked into this before for other projects, and where employing obsolete cartridges and obsolete systems it's a go. For instance if I was to go with the pinfire system I'd be fine and I wouldn't need to bother any further with the "letter agency"
I'll look into it for a personal project. I might have more leeway if I'm not doing it by way of the shop.
I run Fosbery projectiles through the 20-bore caplock SxS handgun with 70 Grains FFG Recoil is entertaining, and I haven't put it over the chronograph, but I'd definitely go at black bear with it.
