A friend of mine just purchased a 458 SOCOM in a AR platform. Not my cup of tea, but this guy thinks it's a great hog buster. He wants me to reload for him, don't have a clue as to this caliber outside of it being a prima donna for the military, 45-70 in a short case and in this case a carbine. How tough is it to load for and what components work> Appreciate your responses.

I loaded some with my Son for his rifle. We used Lil Gun powder and Hornady FTX bullets as well as Hornady 300 gr HP. He later tried some 400 gr. Speer JSP’s but they wouldn’t chamber in his. Ogive was too large.
Not particularly hard to load. We used his Dillon 550. We did run one case at a time and had to get the larger powder die that Dillon sells.
The FTX was most accurate but I wouldn’t want to use them on hogs. Saw a hog killed with one in a 45-70. Dropped it but that bullet exploded.
His rifle was also an AR.

Any .458 projectiles should work, depending on twist of particular barrel. Overall length is you main priority, limited by mag length.

Dan 400-405gr is a common socom bullet as well as the 500gr's. What brand barrel might you have?

Leadhound, don't know my friend left on a camping trip this afternoon. I'll find out on Monday.

Barne's 300g Tac-TX/TTSX are designed for the 458 and expand down to around 1,000 fps (IIRC) if you're looking for a good hunting bullet that won't blow up. Pricey though at $42/50 when on sale. Same deal with Maker's bullets - solid coppers that expand down to subsonic speed, but typically $1+/bullet. I reload pretty extensively for the 458 for both a 10.5" and a 16" bbl. If you're wanting maximum power out of it, I've gotten the highest velocities out of CFE BLK - worked up to 1875 fps in my 16" with Hornady 350g Flat Points with decent accuracy and no pressure signs. Accuracy seemed best at ~1850 though. Lot more info available over on 458socomforums.com where I post fairly often under the same SN. Pore through the load data sub-forum and you'll likely find any data you need. Here's my data with a 16" bbl - use at your own risk, drop 10% and work up, etc: drive.google.com/open?id=1OwAPK1ZoH5PH4Y3kXq--3U7UQowgUHlp
