The hard times and shortages may be a good thing. Look at the bright side to all this. There must be many thousands of new gun owners across the U.S. and maybe thousands of past casual gun owners will wake up and step up. We need all the help we can get in our fight against the anti gunners and control freaks. This just may be the best thing that has ever happened to the "gun culture'

Was discussing that very point with some like-minded co-workers just the other day.
The current frenzy of people buying anything firearm related, gunshows full of people that are new to firearms, seems to me that our voting block is growing faster than ever before.
I think the sleeping giant as been awakened.

NRA memberships have gone thru the roof since last fall. That's definitely a plus. I also urge any member here that doesn't belong to join. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I wouldn't hold my breath about that.
Just because umpteen thousands of people are buying guns and ammo don't mean they'll vote Pro gun next election.
And on the other hand, if this does blow over and things return to normal, the ammo and reloading supplies manufacturers may find themselves suffering a loss of business because nobodies buying. They're too busy yard selling all the stuff they hoarded when they panicked.
About the only benefit I can see to this is it's cleaning out all the old stock. When it's over and done with we'll have fresh powder and primers to shoot up.

We've been through this before. As with '93/'94, this'll pass and we'll have supplies again. I'm sure things will stay lean for the rest of '09 however. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Well, like I said in a post over on the Ruger board, I think it makes a statement to our reps in Washington like nothing else could.
I really don't see folks buying guns and ammo as a bad thing. It would be good if the manufacturere could step up production, but I guess they can only do so much.
I've been through worse things than this, and I have enough to get by.

perspective 1: no it's not good, some ammo has doubled, some is impossible to find,....and components are scarce and pricey too.
perspective 2: it's great! the shooting community has rallied together. they're making some real noise for a change (not just the NRA) in an effort to keep gun rights where they are. lobbyists like the NRA can only carry the banner for so long before the song and dance gets old.

In terms of reloading, I've only had to pay more for primers. I've had good luck with bullets and powder (though I have switched to some off-makes like Green Dot instead of Unique). I feel for those folks that have to shoot pre-loaded. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I stopped by the Cabelas outside Wheeling, WV last weekend after the Friends of NRA banquet in St. Clairsville, OH on Thursday night. The last time I was there, more than a year ago, the shelves were stocked with every brand and caliber of ammunition, shotshells and reloading components imaginable. This trip, the shelves were nearly bare, with guys mostly standing around and looking shocked as they tried to find something as simple as 9mm, .380... Incredible. I agree with Mike Bane's take on this phenomenon as he posted on his blog. Read "Ammo" at michaelbane.blogspot.com/. This is the new normal. I doubt we'll ever see a return to what we once took for granted, despite changes in political winds. Heed Lee's advice: if you're not a member of the NRA, join. If you know someone you care about who is not a member, get them signed up. The Association is our most powerful advocate. But it must not stop there. We must involve ourselves at the grassroots level (with such things as the 9-12 project, and others) if we dare survive.

I have thought about the NRA thing a lot and find it ridiculous how some will come to firearms board and not be a member. Maybe there should be a prerequisite that to join a board you must be a member of a firearm rights organization. Been a NRA life member since 1988 and was a yearly member for 5 years prior.

While I follow your thinking, rigby, and fully understand it, I think it would be unwise, and possibly counter productive to exclude from firearms related forums those who are not members of a firearms rights org. That would be tantamount to excluding sinners from church! We need to get them to the steps of the church (or the NRA) any way we can. Take a look at the 9 principals and 12 values of the 9-12 project at theglennbeck912project.com/9principles12values/. Is this not what we believe in?

Jeff and I (and our oldest brother Greg) did just that right after the debacle (election) of '08.
