John Farley was that Georgia State Trooper. He, Allen, and Jim Fulwood ran together in those days. All three were exceptional shooters. You'd see them at all the big matches. Allen's name is on the NRA 2670 Club list...

Dick...I had one of those 627s...very inaccurate gun... Have one of the PC 686-7s and it is a GREAT shooter.
Had TK Custom rechamber cylinders for a 60-10 3", 66-2 3" and a 649-1 to be able to run Supers..all are very accurate..
A much better round than a 9mm or .38 Special in a snubby...

i want another .38 super, But if i get one i need to buy a Dillon press, If i expect to shoot it much. Lots of good Choices i love Colt 1911s, But I have a Rock Island 1911 in 9mm, I could just have a barrel fitted, and an extractor, and i am good to go. And it pains me to say it , as a Colt Ruger S&W loon, That Rock Island is a very good Gun,. Bought it on a Whim. Just in cause i wanted to shoot less expensive ammo. I have a crap load of .38 Super mags now . Good ones too. ! Sorry if this post is even worse than most of my poor typing stuff, Had day surgery today , i am fine but hi as a kite !

I have been shooting Steel Challenge matches recently using a CZ75 9mm. I like the 1911 platform better so I am dragging my Colt Lightweight Commander out of mothballs to use it. Years ago, when I was going to school in SoCal, I bought a barrel from Irv Stone and as a dumb college kid, I couldn't fit it properly. I called up Irv and since I was semi local, he said come on by and I'll fit it for you. I did, and he did, and in the process he saved me from wrecking the gun which I had inherited from my grandfather. Back then I was all about trying to make major with the .38 Super like Brian Enos and the like. Irv pointed out that I'd wreck the frame. Well, I don't need anything more than 9mm equivalents to shoot steel, so I think it is time to place an order with Starline for some brass. One of the main reasons is with CO's toopid Mag capacity law, I can;t get additional mags for the CZ but 10 rd 38 Super mags are easy!

tj...not new extractor needed.... Several of my Supers have 9mm or 9x23 barrels and never have had an extraction problem. Did once have to shorten up an ejector on a 9mm Defender to be able to eject a fully loaded Super from the ejection port. Still ejects 9mms just fine.
z1r...what are the fist three of the serial number on your Commander...sounds like a 50s vintage gun... I have one 51, 2 52s and a 1956...my favorite Colts...
I've got more than 7K rounds of 1300 fps loads from the blue Commander pictured above that was made in 1952...frame is still going fine. The best thing one can do for an aluminum frame is have it hard chromed....ends all wear...

How about the 38 Super Comp? Just a rimless 38 Super. The run fast shoot fast guys like it. Seemed to function fine in my paper punchers. FWIW note that the rimless characteristic means another shell holder. My Dillon SDB did not like Super and Super Comp cases mixed. I currently cull ALL 38 Super Comp cases..

My Colt 1911 in 9x23 would shoot both 9x23 and 38 Super. But my Para frame/Caspian slide/Nowlin barrel 9x23 will not chamber 38 Super even when loaded with 9mm bullets.

z1r...looks like 1972...CLW013050 to CLW016900
doug...that is strange as the 9x23 is just slightly larger than the .38 Super in the base... All my 9x23 barrels will run .38 Super but only some of my .38 Super barrels will run 9x23...
.38 SUPER COMP is what Colt should have chambered the 1911 in 1929 to begin with...but in 1929 it was the 1911 that was called the SUPER .38 not the ammo...the ammo was still just the .38 ACP. All of Underwood's .38 Super ammo is made in Starline SuperComp brass....zero issues in my guns...

My custom 38 Super 1911 are paper punchers built by paper puncher builders. #1 an old Colt with a Kart barrel built by Dan Norwood. #2 a Caspian slide and frame with a Barsto barrel built by KC Crawford. Never got to accuracy testing of the straight 38 Super versus the 38 Super Comp. One Super Comp case in the 38 Super shell plate stuck in the size die was enough to tell me that I needed to not mix the cases. I'd also bet that in a finely tuned paper puncher you might want to change extractors. 147 grain bullets at 700 FPS is pretty mild.
