I like the round a bunch, If Colt would not have built the old ones with the headspace on the rim instead of the case mouth, it would be much more common. I took my Fusion Firearms Commander out for a spin today. 125 grain Bullets at 1250 fps, is a pretty potent round, Shooting The Sig hardball, it is flat for a government model, I am about half tempted to have fusion fit a super barrel to my RIA full size 9mm. 1911. I sure shoot 1911s better than i do revolvers. Laugh if you want but with head shots i think these 125 grain bullets would bust the skull of any NA animal, but the trick would be getting a good square hit ! Anybody ever try the Winchester silvertips ? ...tj

"like" is an understatement for me...my favorite semi-auto pistol round... Have been shooting and carrying one daily since 1980... And yes, if Colt/Browning had chambered the new 1911 SUPER .38 which was chambered for .38 ACP to headspace on the case mouth like they had the .45 ACP, the round would have probably become the most popular semi-auto pistol cartridge of all time...such is life... Ammo wise, the Silvertip and SIG offerings don't make some makers 9mm +P... If you want real .38 Super ammo look at Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Georgia Arms, CorBon and several other small ammo makers...125s start at 1350 and 115s at 1450.. web.archive.org/web/20170624164255/http://38super.net/hipowersandhandguns.com/Corbon%2038%20Super%20Ammo%20Tests.htmA few months ago I bought my first "new" Colt in a while...it was a stainless Competition Model in .38 Super. Everything one needs in a 1911 Super...and cheap money for what you get... Bob

RJM, i bet that colt is excellent , I have a post here someplace about my competition model .45 Mine is blue steel, except for the Ugly Blue grips that came on it , it is excellent. That underwood and Corbon stuff just costs to damn much, I am tempted to buy another Dillon press though ! And i think it would be great round in a converted single 6 !

If you are going to shoot .38 Super much at all reloading is the way to go...
Used to carry reloaded ammo but at the time I was a licensed manufacturer...but now for carry I use the Underwood 90 grain Xtreme Defender...1560 for a Commander 1650 from a 5"...
I've actually come to like the blue Competition grips... Dropped an old Colt 9x23 Conversion barrel in and have been shooting some factory ammo I have... 1460 fps for the 125 FP and 1440 for Silvertip...smookin'....

I have an EAA Witness Match Elite and Custom Single Six in 38 Super. Can't imagine shooting factory ammo in them. Great cartridge...

If Colt would not have built the old ones with the headspace on the rim instead of the case mouth, it would be much more common.
My first .38 Super came about as a result of the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA 68). When this was passed we did not know exactly what effect it would have on firearms availability. At the time all of the major grocery stores, drug stores, and department stores in my area had gun departments. With the passing of the bill I immediately went to the closest store and bought the three semi-automatic pistols they had. They were all Colt Commanders and chambered in .45 ACP, 9mm, and .38 Super. The latter proved to be a real disappointment as it would not stay on a piece of notebook paper at 25 yards. The reason was the fact the .38 Super headspaced on the very small rim instead of the mouth of the cartridge as did the other two semi-automatics. I sent it to Bill Wilson who installed one of his barrels properly headspaced and the groups immediately shrunk to two-inches and then proceeded to get better. In his 1930 book, “Shooting”, Fitz (John Henry Fitzgerald) of Colt said it was equal in accuracy to the .45 ACP 1911 and superior at longer ranges. So obviously, something went wrong over the following decades. All current .38 Supers are now properly headspaced on the mouth of the cartridge so accuracy is no longer a problem.

Sounds like I need to get me a 38 Super, thanks all you enablers! Dick SENOR SIXSHOT: SNAP OUT OF IT. IN THE NOT SO FAR PAST, I TOO USED TO THINK I NEEDED A 38 SUPER TO COMPLIMENT MY COLT 1911 XSE's IN 45 AND 9mm. FORTUNEATELY I SNAPPED OUT OF IT, CAME TO MY SENSES, AND USED THE MONEY ON BETTER THING, i.e. REVOLVERS. THE 1911 XSE's THAT I "NEEDED", AND GOT, HARDLY EVER GET SHOT, AND GET EVEN LESS CARRY TIME.

I'd love Ruger to add the 38 Super to their 1911 lineup. Even better with a 6" longslide.
Ditto for a 10mm longslide...

THE SUPER .38 IS TO SEMI-AUTOS WHAT THE .44 SPECIAL IS TO SIXGUNS. TAKE A FEW ASPIRINS, GO TO BED AND STAY THERE UNTIL YOU REALLY DO COME TO YOUR SENSES.
