This came up in a search and I really don't know how to evaluate if it's worth rolling my pennies for: www.gunbroker.com/item/871839767I do know the billboard on the barrel is a turn off for me. It looks like OM .357 base guns in decent condition start in the ~$600 range after shipping and fees but I don't know what a caliber conversion runs in cash and time frame. I found 1 5.5" NMBH .44 Special for about $50 less but I prefer the shorter barrels. Beyond cool points (which IS a very valid reason) is there any serious reason to look at the conversion for just a shooter? For discussion purposes, maybe this belongs in the Single Action forum instead of Links?

I saw that too.
I've had some email exchanges with the builder and they seem legit. John Taffin has talk about the value in local gunsmiths in his writing from time to time. (I'm sure to get corrected on this one but that's what I remember). I think this may be one of those cases.
I have a couple OM .44 conversions but I tell ya' that with the factory offering from Ruger it's hard for me to dish out the cash. That never stopped me before.... One is a Gallagher and the other is a Horvath lil gun so there are reasons for them.

If I could track down a factory 4 5/8" NM I'd seriously consider that over an OM conversion. Unless they were all 5.5" and then I'm back to having work done on a new gun but this is the wrong crowd to address that issue...

I've found all my OM's for $400 or less, Couple in excellent condition and a couple used/shooter grade, even so still in good condition. This seems to be a simple conversion, no other "bodywork" performed. Not sure if the builder is known or accomplished, but like the old guys they had to start somewhere. To me, you would be paying for base gun and caliber conversion, and the convenience of getting it now versus waiting on a list. You won't be getting a name (unless he is known) or the added touches of a full custom build. Resale will be in question as well as quality/durability, until proven.

On the OM, NM discussion ... I have one of the early NMFT 44 Spl, 5.5” Bisley conversions. I also have OM 44 Spl. conversions done by Messrs. Bowen, Clements and Gallagher. IMHO, the NM is no match for the conversions that I have ... not even close.

No opinion on the guns built at that shop and they may be great. Also, not to be disparaging. But, I've tried to deal with the guy a couple of times and surrendered.
I asked about work listed on his website and he said it wasn't the thing to do. Then why list it?
Both times we went in circles until I backed out. Won't be a third time.
Plus, when somebody replies to an email "I'll try to explain it to you" I'm done...

TRAPPER DID THIS .44 MAGNUM RUGER FOR ME MORE THAN 40 YEARS AGO. HE WAS A PIONEER IN DOING .44 SPECIAL CONVERSIONS ON .357s BOTH SA AND DA. HE MADE GOOD STUFF.

Which will be on it’s way to me shortly! 4 5/8” .44 SpecialSo that means I’m out of the running for the OM if anyone else was interested.
