Half way through a 3-I/2" diameter piece of o-1, the drive gear on my old bandsaw finally gave in and went to gear heaven. I just spent much of the afternoon finishing the job and reliving my youth with a hacksaw and a vice and heavy perspiration. The event enlightened me, and brought me to grips with several important realizations:
My wife is sadly correct; I am not young anymore
Bandsaws are made for a reason
I don't want Popeye arms, ALTHOUGH a steady week of this nonsense and I doubt the muzzle of my 500L would rise above horizontal!
I hate hacksaws
Bandsaws are made for a reason
An inch and a half to go doesn't look like much on 3-1/2 stock.
Bandsaws are made for a reason
3/4" looks like A LOT TO GO on 3-1/2" stock
NEVER loan your cold saw to your brother the day your saw is going to die.
NEVER have a job on the lathe you can't pull down on the day your saw is gonna die
I am tired - I want a beer.
Guess what I am going to buy in the morning (If you need three guesses you weren't paying attention.)

For the uninformed like me, what is 0-1? Its considered pretty hazardous to cut round stock of any kind on a bandsaw. Saw a guy shred his fingers pretty badly doing that with a smallish piece of round wood once, and know of others who met the same fate.
Hoping you had some means of securing it so it wouldn't roll on you, that's how it happens.
I have no fondness for hacksaws either.

O1 is an oil hardening high carbon tool steel. Been around for a long time. Makes great knife blades.

Yup tool steel, metal cutting bandsaw with handy dandy vice to keep my gnarly cooked fingers properly attached at the root!!! I have seen the finger eating routine with wooden dowel hand fed into a traditional wood cutting bandsaw- grew up in a cabinet making shop. It can indeed be ugly!!!
