While my cylinder was off to Nawth Klina being honed and chamfered, I bought some Arkansas stones to smooth up some internal parts (not my strong suit, btw). I did make some headway on improving the trigger, but it still had too much creep. The admonition to try a little, re-assemble & test fell on deaf ears as usual. When I got the cylinder back and installed, I noticed the cylinder wasn't locking up as designed, so I had to take it apart again. Naturally I took this opportunity to hack away at the delicate internals once again ( I refer you to the chapter on antique flyfishing reel disassembly as a ten year old). Struggling unsuccessfully to keep a 20 minute job to less than three hours, I managed to arrive at a trigger performance better than I had hoped. That's the GOOD news.
Now my loading gate won't open more than a quarter of an inch! Any idea how to fix without my usual comedy of errors hamfisted amateur gunsmithing? Not sure my psyche can survive yet another trip inside that Blackhawk.

Check to make sure the loading gate spring is in its slot, just below loading gate.

Check to make sure the loading gate spring is in its slot, just below loading gate. That's my first guess too. Take a screwdriver and pop that spring back in the groove of the loading gate.

It looks identical in placement to the other two blackhawks, that end of the spring is directly under the pivot point and not protruding into the cylinder window.

Does it cycle as normal? Hammer pull back and bolt drop then pop back up?

Hammer & trigger assembly work fine. On the parts list, what are we referring to as "the bolt"? I took the lower off again, and with the hammer unpinned and laid back, the gate opens fully. What could be in the way with the hammer in place?

Bolt is the cylinder latch, that comes up to the cylinder notches. Its almost always the spring not being in the right spot for the loading gate, sometimes but rarely if the trigger pin is in backwards can bind the spring, the spring needs to be in the notch of the pin.
Check the pin in the hammer for function, push in and let it spring back, sometimes sticks or is broken.

The loading gate can be removed with that hairpin looking spring in place! That can't be right. Am positive the hair-pin looking spring is in cortrectly, with the retaining groove on the loading gate side.

Nope not right. But I think the spring is/was your culprit. Do you have spring keeper to hold spring in place or are you using the three hand punch/screwdriver method?

The latter! Unhooked that spring and loading gate still will not open correctly.

With that spring out of the frame entirely, the loading gate only opens a quarter of an inch when fitting flush like it's supposed to. I'm lost.

I’d say pull everything back out and reassemble carefully, rather than try and figure it out from this point.
