I have hunted with my 405 and the 300 Hornady flat nose. I thought it was soft enough to expand, but it did not and just plowed through the deer. Anybody else hunt deer with the 405 and what bullets are you using? Looking at the Barnes XPB 41 bullets as an option.

Long ago Ken Waters did a "Pet Loads" article on the .405 Win. He used any of the 41 Mag jacketed bullets and the Lyman RN for it. The results were good provided he didn't over drive the jacketed bullets.

I've loaded the 210 XTP over Re7 for a great deer load.
Also any of the cast bullets would work. I use reduced loads for the 40-72 with 5744 and 4759.

Have you tried the spire point Hornady .411's?
I was playing with them in my 450/400 and decided I wouldn't hunt with them because in water jugs or water soaked paper they were just coming apart like a varmint bullet. (I was of course pushing them at 2700 fps)

405 for deer?
5 pound iron mallet for mice?
I have a 405 as done by Winchester/browning/miroku as well - the 405 flat point as told to me by the Hornady guys - was designed for the tougher stuff..
why not just load down w/cast bullets for deer?

I took mine eland hunting in RSA a few years ago, but only shot an nyala with it using a full power load with a 300 gr Barnes Triple Shock. It was a pass thru obviously but no less deadly for it. It appeared to me and the PH and my son that the nyala was literally lifted off its feet and slammed down hard and never wiggled. But the load was meant for a much larger animal. I would not be afraid to tackle buffalo with that load.

I hunted deer and elk with the 405. Had a 310 grain mold from Mountain Molds. Worked pretty well as did the RCBS 350 grain mold for the 416s. The jacketed Hornady bullets are soft and not trustworthy in grizzly country where I live and hunt. The lever loop is much too small fir my hand so the rifle is gone.

Where did you hit the nyala? High shoulder at about 50 yards or less.

Teddy would be proud we still hunt with his Lion Caliber.

This has not been my experience, or that of all the guys on Leverguns.com at the time. When I first hunted deer with the .405, which I bought for an ill-fated trip to Africa, they came completely unglued. I had to brain a 100lb doe because the 300gr Hornady blew up on her shoulder blade. Maybe they're better now but I don't trust them. I switched to the Woodleigh Weldcore but have yet to use them on game. Too many guns, too little time.

Took a Ruger #1 to Africa in 2018. Ammo was handloaded with Barnes 300 grn X-Bullets.
Worked great on Gemsbok and Blue Wildebeest.
