Hello,
Was wondering If anyone has a way to modify the factory pawl to make it free spin? I have read on here that people have tried and it didn't work.
Thanks Scott

Does the barrel need to be removed? Kind of a long reach with the barrel still attached.

You don't need to take the barrel off. If you did, I'd be out of the game for sure. The hole doesn't have to be perpendicular to the breech, just close. I use a 6" long bit. Just use a punch to mark your spot, then drill the right sized hole (I think it is a #43 bit for a 4-40 set screw). Tap it, then get the right length cup point set screw. Set it to the correct depth to just keep the pawl inside the breech area, then flush the portion of the set screw inside the cylinder window with your file so it doesn't hit your brass and you are good to go.

Tim You’ll know when you have the screw in the right spot that Tim is describing. It will “tick” as the cylinder rotates until you have pawl completely out of contact with the ratchet. When the ticking stops, you’re good.

When are you going to hang a shingle? I think I'll stick to my current gig as a semi-retired, currently unemployed engineer. I think it pays better. In two weeks of listening to Hamilton do an amazing job imparting some of his knowledge, I managed to retain about 3 tricks. Probably can't make a living off that. Plus, one mistake and I'm in the hole big time. Can't just run down the street to Alan's shop to have him weld up my mistakes anymore! Tim

Funny, I emailed Hamilton about these classes yesterday. He said he supposedly will be doing one on basics of single actions in Troy NC later this year. I plan on contacting the community college and seeing if it is still on.

I went to his class in troy maybe about 10 years ago. Time well spent for sure. Wouldn't mind going again.
