Just reporting back. Am loading and shooting 250 gn .44 Spl over 7.5 gn Unique, a 429421 bullet sized to .430 in my new production Rossi 92 (.44 Mag). The .44 Spl cartridge feeds exceptionally well. It loads right into the middle of the chamber. I am not sure if that would work with a .44 Mag and the same bullet. I am setting this rifle up to shoot my own revolver loads in .44 Spl. I do not own a .44 Mag revolver, and do not plan on getting one. While the rifling looks shallow, it seems to shoot lead bullets well.
I did add a SS magazine plug and Steve’s plug for the safety. Recoil with the “Skeeter” load in .44 special is light.
The bullet was on target at 50 yards with the rear sight set on the third notch. That seemed like a waste of range to me, so I have filed the front sight down, and dropped the rear sight to the second notch for 50 yards. I am ok with the stock open sights, and plan to use the “set it and forget it” method. Once the sights are set for a known range, and I learn the drop of this bullet, I can adjust elevation by hold-over or -under. This is sort of intuitive, and how I learned to shoot the family .22 as a kid. So I am looking for a permanent place to set the sights (and stop filing).
While I had some problems with the rifle, once it was working, I am pleased with it. I did not slug the barrel, but the .430 bullet (cast from range lead), seems to shoot fine. Springs are original. It is the round barrel carbine. Very light, easy to carry, and points well. I do not hunt any more, so it is just a plinker rifle to shoot the same cartridge as my pistol. I assume the velocity is over 900 fps.
