I’ve often wondered why there was never a 45 Super mag made. You have the 357, 414, and 445, but no 45. I‘m guessing that the 454 Casull came along about the same time, Was it courtesy that the maker of the Supermags (Elgin Gates?) didn’t put out a 45 to compete directly with Dick Casull? Seems like it would be a happy medium between the 454 and 460 that would fit nicely in a Max frame. Or are the cylinders not large/ strong enough? You’d have to have a 5 shot cylinder made I’m guessing.

Now that is an interesting idea Joe! A 357 max frame converted to bisley with a 5 shot 45 caliber cylinder chambered for 414 length cases based on cut down 460 brass. Hummmmmmmmm!
I'm sure more knowledgeable guys than me will come along and say why it isn't a good idea but is intriguing to my mind.

REMEMBER THE SUPERMAGS OTHER THAN THE .357 WERE NOT ALL THAT POPULAR AND DAN WESSON WAS OPERATING ON A SHOE STRING, A VERY FRAYED SHOE STRING. WHEN I WAS THERE IN '92 HARDLY ANYTHING WAS BEING BUILT. THE WESSONS WERE WONDERFUL PEOPLE AND I FELT REALLY BAD WHEN THE COMPANY WENT UNDER.

I actually had plans for one and spoke with JRH about the build, my plan was to simply cut 460 brass to 1.6” and build a 5 shot. Looking at exterior ballistics and case capacities it should have provided what Lee gets from his necked down 45’s. In the end I decided it really wouldn’t do anything the 454 does except perhaps exceed velocity by less than 200fps. So was there any real benefit???..........in my mind NO. So I dropped the idea.
Linebaugh does or did make a 458 maximum, but again to my thinking step up in hole size if you think you want more than the 454.

Got bored again. Didnt do it till about 2011 though. Mean Jelly Bean it is. As with all super mags, it loves 1680 and 5744. Flaky as hell with h110 and 296 with butt loads of fire. Made one 6.5" and one 9.25. Strongly suggest 300 xtps for jacketed. 250s explode on impact no matter what brand. 340 gc leads are just right for the 6.5 which is 1 in 16 twist. The long barrell is a 1 in 30 for the first 2.5 inches and tapers to 1 in 20 the last 3 inches. took me three tries to get that barrel right. Had to see if i could mimic the gain twist. Did it on one of my NC mills believe it or not. Couldnt figure how to do it on my old barrell machine. Seems to work but it is the craziest x versus a axis program i have ever made for a simple linear move. Haha. Built a nutty jig to hold the rifling button bar and turned the barrell as it draws thru. Its a handlfull.. more so than the casull. Bowt the same recoil as 500L 1.4 with 525s. Not for the faint of heart thats for sure Buddy. R

Trapr I can get about 2 to 250 more out of it except for the leads in the long barrel. it really loves the 340gc. Pretty well split between the two on average, (casull versus smith). But you are right sir. Not really anything the old Benchmark casull cant give us or get close to. A hell of alot easier to pack than my, what feels like 96 and a half pound Smith though.LOL More a Novelty i guess. Kind of the, I GOT ONE thing.
