If this is posted in the wrong place, I apologize. Feel free to move it if needed.
Does anyone have any personal experience carrying a large revolver in the Al Gorge vertical shoulder holster, specifically the ones offered by Gary Reeder?
This would be for a Bisley BFR .44mag with 7 1/2" bbl, open sights, in the field and often on horseback in the backcountry. This holster looks like what Im searching for. They are spendy, so I want to do a little research first.

It was one of those beautiful October afternoons that Southwest Idaho is known for. I had hiked to the top of the ridge and was looking across the canyon when I spotted him. It was the largest-racked mule deer I had ever seen before or since. It would definitely be a long shot, however I could lay my vest on the downed log I was sitting on, take a very careful rest, squeeze off a shot, and if everything went right I would have him. It would be a long rifle shot, however the chances were definitely in my favor. Except for one thing. I didn’t have a rifle. I had a deer tag, however my gun of choice this day was a 10” Ruger .44 Magnum, the old original Flat-Top Blackhawk. I had spent the summer finishing up my Masters Degree at the University of Montana and when I got home Diamond Dot and I were out shopping and we stopped at the Gunhaus. There was this beautiful older Ruger priced at $200. That was 50 years ago and that was still a lot of money. I passed on it, went back out to the pickup, told her about it, and she said “Go buy it!” I mated it up with an Al Goerg shoulder holster and that is what I had as I looked across at the big buck. There was nothing I could do except admire him. The amazing thing was I did not feel badly about having only a sixgun. I simply enjoyed watching him and knew from that minute on I was a handgun hunter.

JOHN: BEING OUT OF RANGE ON A GOOD ANIMAL HAS NEVER MADE ME WANT TO GO BACK TO RIFLE HUNTING SO, LIKE YOU, I GUESS I AM A HANDGUN HUNTER, NO AC-DC NOR "BI" STUFF, JUST HANDGUNS.

There's nothing better in the world than a good woman that loves you enough to want you to have a special gun. I really miss my "Dixie"................

There's nothing better in the world than a good woman that loves you enough to want you to have a special gun. I really miss my "Dixie"................ I concur Sir ! Having had one of each, that is, one that didn’t and one that does, I can definitely say that the latter is preferred. But to the OP’s point, my opinion is that shoulder holsters are about a 50/50 deal. They do the job, but present some problems if you have to work clothing changes around them. I once carried a Model 29 in a shoulder holster for a couple seasons of deer hunting. It wasn’t comfortable over a heavy coat, and underneath it was hard to get to. On days with no coat it was fine. Now you are probably built differently than I am, but I much prefer a bandolier type, especially if the revolver is scoped. Anything shorter than a 6.5” barrel goes on a belt. Good luck whatever you decide.

I simply enjoyed watching him and knew from that minute on I was a handgun hunter. You're not really a hunter until you've passed up a good one because of your own ethics. XGBX

Great story! Some of my best deer hunting memories involved ones I didn't shoot. That includes three of the largest bucks I've seen. One was about half an hour after legal shooting time during bow season. Someone else shot a big buck the next morning during shotgun season in the area it was walking towards. Heard it scored 18x. Probably same one. Another was running across a field too far away for an ethical shot. Very wide and high rack. Guessing better than 190. Biggest one was a week after gun season. Guessing easily over 200 gross. Came out of woods with a big group of does followed by two coyotes. First time ever saw that... was near woods edge not that far away. Just sat and watched them go across field. Magical moment. Hope he sired a lot of offspring.
