I had a once in a life time hunt, at least for me, in South Africa for plains game in the works for this summer, but it has been covidified! Now that I’m going to have to wait another year or so to hunt Africa, I’d like to put a notch in my bucket list. I’ve always wanted to hunt javelina in Texas, but have yet to do so. In the past I’d looked at various hunts available on the enter-web, but most seemed to want me to sell a kidney or the likes! Do any of you gentlemen here have any suggestions that would not require me spending my Africa hunt money? I’m not looking for a 5 star resort, just a legit place with good opportunity to take one or two.

KRAL: THERE ARE SEASONS ON JAVELINAS IN TEXAS, VARIES FROM COUNTY TO COUNTY. MAYBE ONE OF THE MEMBERS CAN EXTEND AN INVITE, I CAN'T AS I DON'T HAVE ANY ON MY PLACE.

I knew it was different through out the counties and if I remember correctly, some counties are open year around or nearly.

Kim, I think parts of west Texas are open year round with a limit of 2 Javelina, might be wrong. I have 2 mounted that I shot years ago at Falfurris, Texas & it was a real hoot, took them with my old flat top 44 magnum with Keith slugs. Took 2 others out along the Brazos River with my old model 41 shorty using a 230 gr Keith cast slug as well. I had shot one earlier out of a group of 5 in heavy brush so I pulled out my varmint call & hit it a few times & even though I'm hard of hearing I could hear him! Those jaws were popping, & I just had enough time to get the call stuffed in my pocket when he cleared the brush at about 15 feet. I thought he was going to keep on coming but at the last second he chickened out & turned broadside, all haired up on his back, I was the same but not as much hair! I smoked him through both front shoulders & that calmed him down a bit. Hopefully you can find a hunt out that way towards Sonorra or in that area, I think you would have a great time. Also, don't rule out Arizona, when we use to winter down there I found out they have a lot more Javelina that I thought, lots of tags if you draw one. Good luck, they are a great hunt with a six gun! Check for left over tags in NM. There usually are some for the SW corner of the state. West of the Gila is great for them on the AZ border. You can usually hunt quail at the same time...early next year.

It has been a dozen years or more since I last hunted them in Texas, on the Junco ranch, between Freer and Encinal, so this info is dated. This was an unguided hunt in an area that allowed 2 Javelina on a license. The ranch charged a daily trespass fee, to hunt hogs and Javelina. There were a lot of Javelina there then. The successful hunter would drive a vehicle slowly trickling corn along the roads/ trails. Corn must be TRICKLED! not dumped in piles, because you want those critters to stay on the roads eating it. Otherwise, you'll never see them in the Texas Brush Country. Then glass the roads, looking for Javelina. My contact at that time was Leonard Burnette, the ranch Manager, who lived in Corpus Christi, and drove to the ranch as needed. I'll find his phone number and PM it to you. Of course, since so much time has passed, the info may no longer be good. You can find some photos of those Javelina on the Hunting page of this site under the thread "Some snorters and rooters"

If I had any Javelina on my place you would be welcome. Sadly, I am just a little too far north. I do wish you good luck on your quest.

Javelina is fun and tough at the same time in MY experience. Never hunted Texas though. My first success is recorded here... singleactions.proboards.com/thread/25682/newbie-hunter-second-javelinaIf you follow the thread it tells the story where I actually got success. Was a lot of fun and adventure. I did put in for javelina this past fall and was skunked on the HAM hunt. 10 days of hard hunting and only saw javelina 1 night, 10 minutes before dark, and the stalk would have taken 20 minutes at minimum. Frustrating, but as a good friend told me, each day spent out hunting adds a day to the end of your life....
