When I was a nine year kid, my parents took me to a small dinner party - for grownups. Can’t remember why I had to go and my brothers didn’t, but for some reason it was just me. After the eating part, the grownups wanted to talk without little ears around so Mr. Don, the host, took me up the stairs, reached into a closet, and brought out a big, old rifle. He sat me down at the top of the stairs and told me to look it over. It was mostly brown, with a big octagon shaped barrel. Turned out it was a Model 1886 Winchester. They all talked, but I heard absolutely nothing after Mr. Don placed that rifle in my hand. I was mesmerized, lost from that moment on. Finally it came time to head home and I had to give it back. I never saw that gun again but I never forgot it. Never held another one until today when I picked this up at my FFL. The FFL tried to talk me out of it, offering me pick of some 80 old Winchesters he has collected, but it came home with me. That first encounter was in 1968, inside the Beltway, in Washington DC. My dad was a LtCol in the Army, serving in the Pentagon. I had been handling and firing weapons safely since I was 5 years old, starting with his Colt 1911A1. I doubt many DC folks today would hand a 9 year old kid an old Winchester, but I’m sure glad Mr. Don did that night. It took 52 years to get another one back in my hands. I want to thank Ryan R. for helping me find a good one! Tim

Nice...whats the chambering? 33 WCF. Manufactured in 1904. Tom B is going to provide a few pieces of brass and lead to try it out. Tim

Very cool Princeout! I recently picked two M64 30-30s. One (the Standard) was made in 1935 and shoots very very well! The other is a deluxe mad in 1948. That 1886 of yours is a good looking rifle!

You're going to like it. Shoot it often, they are habit forming.

Very cool, I never had an 86, lots of 92s 94s and at least 1 95, and a 73 too ! Old Winchesters are very cool indeed, and these days can be had at decent prices. The only one i own today is an 1899 Vintage 94 30/30 SRC. I need to get it out and shoot it. I still say my 30/30 is a great gun , and useful for just about anything. It would in the hands of a guy who knows how to use still make a decent fighting rifle. With a good 170 grain bullet , i is a good Elk rifle to 100 yards, I have a chunk of dough in my my gun safe , waiting for a good buy on another Cool Classic Could be anything from a 1911, to a Colt new service , Colt or SnW 1917 , But Lately , i want a round barrel 92 rifle in 32/20. Or a 95 SRC, in 30/40 30/03 or 30/06. I saw one in 303 Brit once ! that would be cool too. Old Winchesters are just cool , and the still work well. ...tj

John Barsness did a article on that very rifle and cartridge combo in Handloader magazine Dec 2016 issue 305. His isn’t near the condition yours is in and had some interesting results of course but I think that look to me a marvelous rifle for sure.

I'll have to see if I can round it back up. Tim
