(Okay, I stole the title from meatpukk) I think this one was made in 1985 but I'm not sure yet. For it's age it sure looks nice! The rear sight blade was a little bent so I replaced it. Hopefully I'll get to test it soon... Sorry for the lousy cell phone pics.

Nice! Is that a dash 3? Give me the 3 digit alpha prefix and I’ll see what the standard catalog of S&W says

Nice! Is that a dash 3? Give me the 3 digit alpha prefix and I’ll see what the standard catalog of S&W says Kind of hard to make out the last number but it's definitely a Mod 29-6. It's a special order, I guess that explains why it has wood grips instead of Hogues. The 3 digit alpha prefix is CAC.

Those grips were not original to a model 29-6. They stopped using wood after the 29-5 and even then they had a speed loader cutout not a football cutout like yours. The football cutout was used on the 29-2 and -3. Your 29-6 would have come with S&W logo Hogue grips like this one of mine in the back. The 29-2 in the front wears its original grips CAC most likely dates to 1995

Since the original owner had bottomed out the rear sight I had a suspicion it probably shot high. I replaced it with the lowest rear sight I had and took along two spares (each a little taller). Turns out I was right and the lowest one worked perfect! That might change at very long range but I've got options! Two groups at 25 yards (seated, back to a post, between the knees) Bullet: Sierra 220 gr. FPJ-Match Powder: VihtaVuori N105 17.0 grs. Primer: Federal 150 Case: PMC

I noticed that you're using the VihtaVuori N105. I've used a lot of the N340 and some of the N110 for hot loads with great success. I don't see many folks loading with it.
How did you get started with the VV and how do you like it? It's real obvious that S&W 29, Dirty Harry shooter, loves it.
You're a man after my own heart with that long barrel. At 100 yards, I'm betting she could make steel sing, shout, screech, shriek, and scream.

When I was loading up some ammo all the brass I had was already primed with Federal 150s - that kind of ruled out using H-110 and 296. I was out of 2400 and Bluedot too. I had plenty of N-105 (I use it for major loads in my .38 Super Open Gun) so I decided to give it a try. It wasn't bad and burned pretty clean.
