Light weight 41 special Ruger old model on a 357 mag chassis. 4” barrel Gonna keep the aluminum gripframe and erh. 90% leaning toward scalloping the recoil shield. Can the aluminum gripframe be rounded? What ya think?

That's funny. I'm working on a similar build. Same caliber, base gun, etc with a 6.5" barrel.
The aluminum gripframe can be rounded. I've had a couple done.

It sure can be done on an old model conversion to 41 Special. Here is the gun you described but with a 4" S&W barrel.

Can the aluminum gripframe be rounded? What ya think? ***** I find the scalloped recoil shield an abomination of the Peacemaker aesthetic. Spend the money you save on bullets and have a better looking gun. A couple of aesthetic facts: the Colt Peacemaker is the all-time benchmark beauty of revolvers; the Ruger Blackhawk is the all-time benchmark beauty of adjustable sight single actions. David Bradshaw

Can the aluminum gripframe be rounded? What ya think? First and foremost. Absolutely the frame can be rounded, But, Buuuuttttt, Limited by the version of Grip frame. Not That i would consider myself an expert on grip frames but i have welded up a few! Well maybe a few hundred or so. Hahaha I love one off stuff. Just cant leave anything alone i guess. But i fell in love with a frame that Taffin owns or wrote up! Saw it in a book a long time ago and just had to do it. I assume you are talking about an XR3 Red there Foxtrapper. Here is an example of two of the four versions of aluminum Reds that lend them selves to mod. The version on the lower left has to be welded for any thing more than a small radius so there is some platen left for the panel. The frame on the right will allow a descent radius. The frame on the top level is my XR3 Round butt which i really like and we call it the Taffin here at RWGF. I have often thought about calling mr Taffin and asking him if he had a problem naming that frame The Taffin Round Butt but i saw an article recently that stated he didnt prefer them. I sure do like the feel of it for a light weight rigs. As far as scalloping goes, ive done a few and you will have to get a scale that weighes in grains to see the difference. I will doit for someone but i like the standard old school look. I think because i am getting old. Haha! I would be more than glad to Aluma tig that booger up for you and round it up if you would like! Check you PM Bud. Or ofcourse there are plenty of good smiths that im sure are capable.

I do not care for drastically round-butted grip frames such as those called Birds Head. However I do like both the front and rear bottom of the grip frame rounded off enough to be comfortable in my hands. About a quarter inch radius is fine.
