I'm going to build myself a couple of 44spl flat top old model Ruger and would like some input from those here with much more experience. I'll send the cylinders off to be rechambered but I'll rebarrels them myself. One gun will be a 4 5/8" to carry around the ranch and one will be 7 1/2" for when I'm intentionally hunting. I love the looks of both octagon and banded barrels and simply can't decide on what I want to do. Given the choice, would you rather have an octagon barrel or a round barrel with banded sight? The round barrel will be much easier for me to handle in the lathe, but I have come up with a solution for the octagon barrel that I believe will work very nicely. Thanks upfront for any and all input!

The whole idea of a personal custom is to do what YOU like not what someone else thinks. Follow your own best instincts knowing this is a win-win situation as it will look good and handle great no matter which one you choose. Personally I like round barrel/banded front sight the best but that is only me.

Go with what you like. I will say though the banded barrel is muzzle heavy and for me, I'd go octagon.

Thanks much for the input thus far. Maybe a 4 5/8 octagon to carry and a 7 1/2 banded to hunt with where the muzzle weight won't be much concern... Also, since I love the feel of my new model flat top bisleys, I was considering converting these old models to bisley during the process as well. How much more is involved converting an old model?

I can see both sides of this...
Agree that customs reflect the owner's vision and should be done his way.
At the same time, I always ask several friends for ideas and input. They always provide some details that I've missed.
Let us know what you decide...

I personally like the looks of a octagon barrel on a longer barrel and a barrel band on a shorter barrel. Not sure why, just personal preference. I think the octagon is just so good looking it should be extended as much as possible to be shown.

How much more is involved converting an old model? ***** Ronnie Wells tells me that he has mapped CNC for “old model” Blackhawks. This also opens the door to various grip frame configurations. Found one I liked just yesterday googling around, can not recall the builder, was Octagon to end of ERH or just past then round to end of barrel 7-1/2"

Brass frame Bisleys would look good. Might be an issue finding proper hammer though

Brass frame Bisleys would look good. Might be an issue finding proper hammer though I agree, but don't think I've got the coin to drop $350 for brass when I can get SS or CM for $100.

CM Bisley on an OM. Wasn't easy blending the top of the GF to the frame and mine isn't perfect.

Given everything is the same (length, caliber, etc.) is an octagon barrel heavier than a factory round barrel?
