I use either a card stock over shot wad or a leather over shot wad and then a drop of Elmer’s,.....and have no issues. I tried using just wax but in Texas heat it softened and shot dumped out. The cardboard of shotgun shell boxes is my favorite.

I put a card stock wad over the shot, then crimped and melted the wax into place

Those blue tipped loads tripped my iffy memory. Recalled Glaser Safety rounds. Then my mind jumped to a loading project I never made progress on. A frangible 480 load ! Someone on this forum tipped me to filling a spent 45acp hull with shot and loading into a 480 hull. A very neat idea but every usage I could dream up could be solved in easier more normal ways. When bored, I may still yet pull that stuff out and try, just because !

Thanks for finding and putting in the link, Squigz. To give credit where due, member Freedom kicked off that discussion.

I shot my 5 first shot shells and I need some input on what to do differently. First all fired but I only got a decent pattern from about 10-12 feet away. Is this normal? Also I got quite a bit of leading in my model 10 barrel. Is this because the wad maybe wasn’t sealed from the powder and the charge melted the shot? Or is it just because shot isn’t designed for rifled barrels. Sorry but I don’t know much about shotshells. Here is a sized case and a fire formed case. All ejected nicely

I normally shoot my snakes from 6-8 feet so I get good patterns, I’d think 10-12 feet is being a bit optimistic on effectiveness. I doubt shot was “melted”

Also don't think shot melted. Not sure what you might do better for a wad. I've never shot 5 in a row. It's been one, then a step or two back, then maybe a couple bullets. Shot generally flies in a "swarm:. What we call a pattern is what passed thru a piece of paper or target. One dimensional.

I make over powder cards for obsolete black powder cartridges. I punch oversized discs from milk carton, basically thin waxed card stock. For each cartridge size I make a sizing ring into which I push the discs with a properly sized punch. The product is a very shallow cup. Think the bottom of a Dixie Cups with the bulk of the sides cut off. Lots of words, but it's a simple process. These cups get seated towards the powder. Combustion inflates the sides of the cups against the barrel bore, helping with the gas seal. The brass punch is for the cards, you can see one of them (red) in the forming ring.
