I absolutely hate those infernal creations. When I shoot under a covered firing line I don't have much trouble with them. But, in the sunlight they give me fits. Especially the way the one range I am using now at the club I belong to. I am getting ready to have a patridge blade put on my M629.

When my eyes were younger I didn't seem to have a problem with them.

Same. I have a Model 63 that would be much easier to shoot without that shiny washed out plastic staring back at me.

Patridge blades are a huge improvement for my eyes and most shooters. That is why the 1950 Target .44s and .45s were so equipped.

I think i might have one of fermins patridge sights with the mirror , but on my 7.5 inch Ruger. Slightly narrowed. I need a bit of extra room around the blade. I would love a gold bead on it too !

BACK IN THE 70's AND 80's RED RAMP FRONTS WERE ALL THE RAGE, I KNOW BETTER NOW! I PREFER ALL BLACK NOW, PREFERRABLY PATRIDGE STYLE vs RAMP. SOME PATRIDGE STYLE BLADES ARE SQUARE ON THE FACE, SOME ARE UNDERCUT AND SOME, LIKE THE BOWEN AND 2 DOGS FS's, HAVE A VERY SLIGHT SLANT TOWARDS THE FRONT, ALL OF THEM, FOR ME, ARE WAY BETTER THAN RAMP.

Ramps, like the standard ones on Freedom Arms and Ruger, turn gray on me... I still have red or a yellowish green inserts on my Smiths and they don't bother me... I've also come to appreciate fiber optics on some guns...
Only wish that all manufacturers had the Freedom Arms or S&W Performance Center style quick change front sight blades... The one on the GP-100 also is great...

Deer slain over the classic Smith & Wesson Model 29 sights on all three barrel lengths test to their versatility in the woods. I’ve held fire on black sights which gave me insufficient picture to squeeze. Mind you, black sights may have worked fine for half of those shots, but I would not have traded. Ruger’s Redhawk copy rolls plenty mileage on the Ruger 03 .45 Colt/.45 ACP. Missed a buck on a neck shot with chronograph pioneer Ken Oehler, trying to read black sights against motley mesquite.
Soon into campaigning an 8-3/8” M-29 on steel, the factory installed a Patridge with plain black blade. Introduces greater consistency on the silhouette range, while lowering woods utility.
As for the Baughman red ramp comes on the 29, when Smith & Wesson offered to install any irons they catalog on carried 29’s, I said You already have. David Bradshaw

Red insert in a front sight blade looks good in a display case. Brownell's makes a kit to change out the insert. Pick your color. Mine go green. Not a nice patridge but looks better than the hole where you removed the red.

Thanks! I had no idea that even existed!
The older I get, the more important the color/shape/make of a front sight matters!

My M69 still wearing the red insert factory blade. Wanting a F/O, soon. The red insert is nice at a well and proper lit indoor range. Also lets you know which end is the dangerous end..

The red ramp front sight is the one thing I could do without on my favorite long barrel smiths. I’m not a hunter and even when I was shooting groundhogs with my 686 I preferred a black patridge front sight. I’ve since let it go due to some other issues but it was my favorite shooter for a while.
