Hello I know there is a lot of love for the Smith 69 on here and I do have a 4” one of those as well. I’m wondering about the 296? I’ve seen one for a pretty decent deal and am seriously tempted to get it. Just don’t know. I’ve never shot or handled one. Was just curious what the majority like/dislike about it. Thanks When Smith & Wesson came up with their five-shot .44 Specials, 296, 396, and 696 I bought the latter two but I just couldn't like the looks of the 296. The two I bought are still doing fine service.

John.... just looked up the Model 396 Night Guard. Don’t see weight listed, but length is given as 73-inches! One superior feature shown----Pachmayr Compac grip. David Bradshaw

Like usual, David nailed it. I really hate my 360PD Scandium. I would never go to the woods without it. I'm too light in the butt to keep my pants up trying to carry any weight at all. Cinching them up all day gets old quick. The little 360pd only weights 13 oz. and I actually forget I'm wearing it. The other side of that coin is that it is the most brutal shooter I own. The recoil shooting a good 357mag is downright painful. The caveat is that the one time I had to fire it, I never felt the recoil. A few minutes later and the adrenaline started to wear off, I felt it when my hand started to ache. For me, this is the greatest "carry" gun ever made. On the other hand, it is absolutely the worst range toy ever invented by some sadist. And David got the grip part right about putting rubber on that covers the metal backstrap (duh, what was SW thinking?). Depending on your plan for it, you will love it or hate it. Or like me, both at the same time. Prescut LOL ... I have the same problem trying to keep my britches up. And I also have a 360J (.38) that I dearly love. It disappears in a Mika pocket holster. I gave up on wearing belts a few years ago and wear suspenders instead, works great with the pocket holster. I didn’t completely give up on belts, I do occasionally wear a gun belt.

This one is my idea of a little 44 Special thumper. Rossi 720 DAO, loaded with cast bullet handloads or the CCI Blazer 200 gr JHP load it’s a good CHL piece, and mighty handy for snakes loaded up with shot loads. I’ve owned several of these over the years, solid little guns. Most of them you see have a conventional DA/SA action and adjustable sights. This one is the only fixed sight versions I’ve ever seen. I even bought a parts kit to add the conventional hammer and trigger, but never have gotten around to it.

Well I thought I had it all figured out but maybe not. Found a new charter bulldog 44 and bought it and took it out today. Didn’t even make it through 25 rounds and the trigger wouldn’t work right in single action. I’m really disappointed about it. It is the perfect size and weight. Now it’s gotta go back to the manufacturer.
A bright spot was the second model hand ejector I recently bought. It tricked along great, shot to the sights and functioned beautifully for a 100+ year old gun.
The charter will go back to the factory and im still looking at the 296 but also a Taurus tracker and another smith 69, but with the 2.75 barrel.
Thanks for all the help.

Warhawk, could you please weigh your Rossi? I would like one for a woods gun if they aren't too heavy. They have a very business like look that I admire.

My 296 is a great shooter. Not to be confused with a fun shooter. I actually pocket carry it most of the time. I don't think you would be disappointed at all. I have several of the lite weight smiths (seven at the moment) and have never had a problem with them. They do not get shot very often but do get shot. Great carry guns.

Depending on your plan for it, you will love it or hate it. Or like me, both at the same time I agree with all said about great to carry but only shoot if needed. If anyone is unsure as to visuals and how they compare to other hammerless guns . If they were a woman they would be cussin , spiting , cigar chewing ,truck drivin woman. Yup, mine now wears larger square butt conversion grips ,,,,,,,, it really was not a choice.
