It was fun watching a master at work, there's a reason Mark has taken over 200 head of game with handguns because he works at it. Feed him a little raw meat & gun powder for breakfast & he takes off. I stayed on one side & he would cross the steep canyon where the bears were & get the wind in his favor, the only problem was seeing them in some heavy cover once he got over there. I had a great view on 2 good stalks, I could see Mark on one side of the pines & the bear on the other but each time the bears got lucky. On the missed shot it was because the ridge we were on was as steep as a cows face & Mark had to shoot from a very difficult angle with his head cocked sideways & yet he still almost pulled it off. I'm certain he took hair off of that bear even at 406 yds. I'll stop here & Mark can fill in the blanks but it was an amazing sequence both times. Both were within Marks limits with the FA 44.

Absolutely awesome!!
We're going to need information on the load out as well! I assumed the long shot was with a xp or m48, now I'm really interested to hear about it with that 44!

The pinned up rocks serve as a country boy's method of corner post. I have some of these on my farm.
The country was beautiful as you can see. We were waiting and watching from above for the bears to come out of the pines and feed. Once we would spot a bear, I'd climb down from the mountain to the bottom of the canyon and try to locate the bruin. I was hoping for an opportunity with the Freedom Arms .44 Mag. After several hours waiting and looking for the bear spotted earlier, I finally climbed back up the mountain -- which reminded me I wasn't 30 years old. While discussing matters with Dick, on two separate occasions -- the bear popped back out right where I'd been waiting. The 406 yard attempt was with an H-S Precision in 270 WSM. The gun is perfectly capable. Pilot error influences miss. At one point, the bear I shot at, sat down on his rear facing us. He had a white chevron on his chest that would have made for an ideal target. The bears won this round - hopefully Dick will return with one of his sons or grandsons and even the score. Again, this was a great hunt and quality time spent with Dick.

If you look at that last photo of the pine trees you notice 4 small pines running out to the left about half way down. I wish I had taken a photo of the bear feeding right there but I was in a tizzy hoping Mark could see him. Mark was straight south of him at the top of that opening in the pines where you see the rocks. At most it was 75 yds but too much cover in the way! So the bear drops down for a drink & Mark drops down to find him & it's thick in the bottom & he can't locate the bear & crosses over to me & as soon as he gets to me the bear walks out, right over Marks tracks!!!!

It's called "hunting" for a reason.
Non-hunters have no concept of the work involved. Nor do they understand the deep appreciation for Mother Nature's beauty we hunters enjoy. The picture with the double rainbows is great.
But it's the hunt, the friendships created, the common bond of hunting, and the wonders that God gives us,, that all of us who have been there deeply appreciate.
